E. Siman, Jr., (Navy V-12, \u201944), Foley\u2019s long-time friend and manager, the annual award is presented to talented Berea College students in recognition of their musical contributions to the social life of the campus community.\u00a0 This award is intended to assist the recipient in a professional music career, if he or she so desires, and to promote the kind of music associated with Red Foley\u2019s career, such as folk, country, bluegrass, gospel, and popular music.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.berea.edu\/appalachian-center\/the-red-foley-memorial-music-award\/nominations-1\/\">\u00a0Nominations<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.berea.edu\/appalachian-center\/the-red-foley-memorial-music-award\/past-winners\/\">Past Winners<\/a>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>About Red Foley<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-88 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/legacy.berea.edu\/appalachian-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2016\/02\/Red-Foley-bio-photo.jpg\" alt=\"Red Foley\" width=\"125\" height=\"150\" \/>Red Foley\u00a0(June 17, 1910 \u2013 September 19, 1968) was born on a 24-acre farm in\u00a0Blue Lick, Kentucky, and grew up in nearby Berea, where he attended the Berea Academy School. \u00a0He was born into a musical family, and by the time he was nine, he was giving impromptu concerts at his father&#8217;s general store, playing French harp, piano, banjo, trombone, harmonica and guitar.<\/p>\n<p>In 1930, as a freshman at Georgetown College, he was spotted by a talent scout from Chicago&#8217;s WLS-AM and was chosen to sing with producer John Lair&#8217;s Cumberland Ridge Runners, then the house band on the National Barn Dance. \u00a0In 1937 he worked with Lair and Whitey Ford to help establish the Renfro Valley Barn Dance, performing everything from sentimental ballads to boogie-woogie and blues.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-89 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/legacy.berea.edu\/appalachian-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2016\/02\/mile_mark_small.jpg\" alt=\"Clyde Julian &quot;Red&quot; Foley mile mark\" width=\"250\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/legacy.berea.edu\/appalachian-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2016\/02\/mile_mark_small.jpg 250w, https:\/\/legacy.berea.edu\/appalachian-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2016\/02\/mile_mark_small-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From 1944-59, Foley charted 41 solo country entries, of which 38 were Top 10 hits. \u00a0Six went to the top, including his 1950, million-selling &#8220;Chattanoogie Shoe Shine Boy,&#8221; which also topped the pop charts.\u00a0 For more than two decades, Foley was one of the biggest stars of the country music genre. \u00a0His 1951 hit, &#8220;Peace in the Valley,&#8221; was also the first million-selling gospel record, and was entered into the Library of Congress\u2019 National Recording Registry in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Foley was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1967 (the first Kentuckian and one of only six then-living inductees), which honored him as &#8220;one of the most versatile and moving performers of all time&#8221; and &#8220;a giant influence during the formative years of contemporary Country music and today a timeless legend.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Foley Middle School, named for the singer, opened in Berea in 1978. \u00a0In 2002, he was inducted into the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame.\u00a0 And on June 10, 2003, a Kentucky State Historical Marker (#2114) was placed at Foley&#8217;s boyhood home in Berea.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]In 1970, Berea College established the Red Foley Memorial Music Award.\u00a0 Initiated by Ely.
