Her teaching method engages the class in a blend of Appalachian history, interactions with historical artifacts from relevant periods of time, and critical writing\/thinking exercises.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Throughout the semester our course is also joined by Damon Rosenbarker who leads the class each month in a more hands-on learning experience. Damon has taken AMI students on excursions such as hiking trips and cano<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">eing, baking cornbread in dutch\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ovens, and even taught us how to craft our own Gee-Haw toys (<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">also known as a whimmy-<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">diddle).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One of the primary focuses of this initiative is to foster a sense of community and efficacy among these Appalachian Males. The combined efforts of our APS 121 course, interactive lessons outside of the traditional classroom setting, and events in the Loyal Jones Appalachian Center all aim towards providin<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">g these students sp<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ace to learn about themselves, their history, their capabili<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ties, and the journeys that face<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0them here at Berea College.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Leaving home and transitioning into college can be daunting. I\u2019ll never forget my own move-in day<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2096 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/legacy.berea.edu\/appalachian-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2019\/03\/gee-haw-day-2-225x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/legacy.berea.edu\/appalachian-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2019\/03\/gee-haw-day-2-225x300.png 225w, https:\/\/legacy.berea.edu\/appalachian-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2019\/03\/gee-haw-day-2-768x1024.png 768w, https:\/\/legacy.berea.edu\/appalachian-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2019\/03\/gee-haw-day-2.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/> experience. As my sister and I crossed campus and stared up at the mystical mixture of brick building<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and luscious treetops we both had the same reaction; it felt like Hogwarts.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Something not of our known world.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As I look back now I can la<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ugh at how infinite and magical\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">this place felt. To some this is empowering, inspiring, and the opportunity of a lifetime<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(as<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0it truly is). However, for others? T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hose towering academic fortresses become a weight too heavy to bear. The responsibilities of a Berea College student begin to pile on their shoulders and it only takes one wrong step\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for a promising student\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to fold in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on themselves\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">like an accordion.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The AMI and the Loyal Jones Appalachian Center have been working together to create a welcoming space for conversation and productivity in our gallery as well as Faber Library. Not just for these AMI students, but for our entire campus. Faber Library is a resource we strongly urge students to take advantage of when faced with a research assignment pertaining to the Appalachian Region or its culture. We focus in on what\u2019s directly in front of us and forget the broader campus as a whole. With a campus culture that places such an emphasis on hard work and taking on multiple roles\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0understandable that we sometimes fall into these ruts of isolation.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0One of our goals in working with these three groups of students is to intentionally seek out time and places where we can come together in fellowship.
