Since 1987, more than 70,000 college and university graduates from all around the world have taught their native languages in Japan through the JET Program, which is administered by the Japanese government in cooperation with 38 other national governments. For most of that time, only one applicant from Berea has been successful each year.\u00a0 In 2019, however,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.berea.edu\/ast\/2019\/03\/28\/record-number-of-bereans-accepted-by-jet-program\/\">six Berea graduates were accepted by the program<\/a>, setting a new record, which was nearly matched by Berea\u2019s success <a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.berea.edu\/ast\/2020\/04\/02\/all-four-berean-finalists-accepted-by-jet-program\/\">in 2020, when all four finalists from Berea were accepted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Due to the pandemic, competition for placement through the JET Program has become even more intense, and in 2021, no Berea applicants were successful.\u00a0 This year, however, three finalists from Berea \u2013 alumni <strong>Fatima King \u201914 <\/strong>and <strong>Nicole Mangin \u201919 <\/strong>and graduating Asian Studies major <strong>Michelle Mecham \u201922 <\/strong>\u2013 received offers of positions with JET.\u00a0 All three will become\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jetprogramusa.org\/positions\/\">Assistant Language Teachers<\/a>\u00a0(ALTs), helping to teach English in Japanese K-12 classrooms.\u00a0 They will join a long and steady line of Bereans who are connecting Japan with the United States.\u00a0 Congratulations and \u304a\u3081\u3067\u3068\u3046 to all!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every year, a handful of Berea seniors and graduates apply for the highly competitive\u00a0Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program.
