{"id":133,"date":"2018-03-16T17:02:09","date_gmt":"2018-03-16T17:02:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.berea.edu\/bereawritingguide\/?page_id=133"},"modified":"2018-06-06T13:16:45","modified_gmt":"2018-06-06T17:16:45","slug":"paragraphing-workshop-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/legacy.berea.edu\/bereawritingguide\/writingworkshops\/paragraphing-workshop-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Paragraphing Workshop 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<strong>Another Paragraph Workshop Protocol<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Set up the groups as you deem most productive, and then assign the following topics for consideration.<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Does this essay suggest how the investigation will be organized in the introduction, and is that plan carried out? If not, please suggest to your partner one or two possible ways of organizing the essay at the paragraph level.<\/li>\n<li>Do the paragraphs each contain the four major elements of that unit of writing, namely: (a) topic or single main point stated near the top of the paragraph; (b) evidence in the form of direct quotation, directly cited research, or text-based reference; (c) analysis or interpretation of the evidence that expresses a specific insight and shows why the evidence is singularly valuable for this thesis; and (d) concluding sentence that transitions between paragraphs and connects back to the thesis? If not, please point out what is missing, and specify the element(s) that will complete the paragraph.<\/li>\n<li>Do the paragraphs proceed in an order that sustains a logic of refinement and increases in subtlety or persuasiveness as it proceeds? Note on paper what point is made in each paragraph that extends the depth of previous analysis, and note how or why its place in the essay is crucial to the organizational form of this paper. Where paragraphs seem haphazardly ordered or random, what element(s) would strengthen the order of the points, or how might they be re-arranged? Should a paragraph be cut entirely, or should one paragraph be split into two (and for what purpose)? Describe how the author may better make her or his claims follow a path of refinement and persuasion in each paragraph-level of thinking.<\/li>\n<li>Restate in your own words the point of the introduction and conclusion. Note where the intro has a strong hook to pull in the reader, and if it lacks a hook, suggest one. Note how the conclusion adds substantially to the essay, and if it is only a formality, suggest how to make it more significant. <em>Authors and Reviewers<\/em>: often the conclusion is a place for grounded speculation or proposed \u201cnext steps.\u201d So one way to organize the essay is to see the Intro and Conclusion as bookends to the essay, one telling us what will happen, and the other reminding us what has happened and what insight may be drawn from that process of discovery.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<em>This website is a collaboration between Berea College professors Anne Bruder and Jason Cohen.
