[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]First Draft, Reading-Aloud Protocol for Workshopping<\/strong><\/p>\n

During the next hour, you will dedicate yourself to understanding and helping to refine your partners\u2019 work. There are five topics that I want you to consider: argument (thesis), organization (paragraphs), evidence (story and quotations), voice (tone) and finally the Big Burning Question (stakes of the argument). I have broken these topics into questions below.<\/p>\n

Directions: <\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Listen to your partner\u2019s essay as he or she reads. Listen actively, pen in hand, marking things as you go. Answer the questions to the best of your capacity, and write down questions you have about these areas as well.<\/li>\n
  2. Discuss your findings with one another briefly.<\/li>\n
  3. Email one another over the next day to discuss refinements, and be sure to cc your instructor on the email so we can see that you have completed the work.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Prompts:<\/strong><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Argument: Discuss the THESIS of the paper you\u2019re reading write it down. Restate it below in your own words, and state what you HOPE to see the paper do (especially if what you want to see is not completely accomplished in this draft.<\/li>\n
    2. Organization: As the reader goes through the work, note each major topic or point, which should reasonably correspond to paragraphs. Your notes could be a single word or short phrase like \u201cExample #2 \u2013 coffee.\u201d Then once you have your labels jotted down, write the topic of each paragraph in sequence in the space below. Finally, suggest ONE change that you want to see in the order of topics\/paragraphs (eg, #3 might do better before #2 because X; or I didn\u2019t understand what paragraph #4 was doing, etc.).<\/li>\n
    3. Evidence: For each paragraph, indicate below what source of evidence was used, and how it relates to the thesis. Suggest at least ONE other specific types of evidence, direct quotation, or conclusion that would strengthen this argument.<\/li>\n
    4. Voice: In the lines below, state what audience you think the essay considers, and make at least ONE specific suggestion where language could be made more powerful or concise. Consider asking about the focus of a single sentence, or about combining sentences into more complex units of thought.<\/li>\n
    5. Big Burning Question: What is the B.B.Q. of this essay? In one sentence, state what you think makes the essay tick. In other words, what\u2019s its \u201cAha!\u201d moment? In a second sentence, state why the author (or you) believe that this particular question is important for our class to consider in terms of life in contemporary society, or for another explicit reason.<\/li>\n
    6. Planning next steps: What in specific needs to be strengthened in revision? (Structure, Research, textual connections, etc.) Discuss the author\u2019s specific plans for revision and map the steps \/ things to do \/ action points.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
