This exercise can be useful for self-analysis on students\u2019 own work, or it can be done as a workshop. I also like to do this one in pairs given that it takes substantial time for each round.<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Identify and sharpen the frame: Find and refine the following elements of your essay \u2013 your introduction, conclusion, topic sentences and major claims, and\/or problem and solution sentences.<\/li>\n<li>Think like a reader: Find and mark the places in your paper that lay out your plan for the paper. This plan often includes a short statement of the sequence of claims you will make. Indicate in the margins those places where you move between pieces of evidence or arguments. Make sure your transitions are clearly sign-posted, and explicitly state the relationship between the previous claim(s) and the subsequent one.<\/li>\n<li>Diagnose the continuity of your paper: Circle key concepts in your paper, and make sure you have introduced them in the opening paragraph. Do you maintain a strong focus on those same terms throughout the essay, or does your essay drift among many terms? If it drifts, which terms are the most important ones, and how will you hone your paper to reflect your concern with your key terms?<\/li>\n<li>Subjects and characters: Identify the actor in each sentence \u2013 who or what is doing the actions in your sentences? Are your verbs written in active tense? Are your verbs close to the nouns they refer to? Can you otherwise simplify your sentences without losing the nuance of your thoughts?<\/li>\n<li>Old before New: Have you introduced new ideas toward the end of the sentence, or have you shocked your reader by inserting unfamiliar concepts at the beginning of a phrase? How can you clarify your sentence-level organization, and in particular, how can you begin sentences by introducing a familiar concept before moving on to new material?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<em>This website is a collaboration between Berea College professors Anne Bruder and Jason Cohen.
