Students can end up focusing on grades instead learning. In an attempt to prioritize the behaviors that lead to improved writing, some faculty chose to use grading contracts in lieu of traditional scoring throughout the semester. Compositionists Jane Danielewicz and Peter Elbow describe show such contracts can encourage greater student engagement with the work of the course as well as eliminate any unpleasant and counterproductive conversations about grades.

I (Anne) have used a grading contract in several of my GSTR 110 sections as well as in other writing classes within the English major. My sample contract, based largely on Jane Danieliwicz’s one, is printed in full below. In the semesters in which I’ve used the contract, I’ve enjoyed the total absence of any discussion about grading throughout the entire semester. Nearly all students meet the terms of the contract; the few who do not receive a grade lower than a “B” as their final mark in the course. More importantly, though, I notice that when I use the contract, I find my students taking far greater risks in their actual drafting process. As there is no “penalty” for illogical analysis or strained connections, I find students reaching — sometimes overreaching — further afield in their essays. Reaching out to the edge of their understanding often seems the most productive way to get them to think beyond their comfort zone.

But using a grading contract does demand tremendous vigilance in terms of making sure that all students are following all of its terms. A simple spreadsheet with each of the rules, along with student names and dates, can ease the burden of keeping track of behaviors each day. I’ve also found this to be a good task for my TAPL.

Anne’s Sample Contract for GSTR 110, based on Jane Danieliwicz’s work

Instructions:

Read the following contract. Your signature at the bottom of the contract means that you fully understand the terms of the contract. Should you break the contract at any point in the semester, you will revert to a traditional, quality-based grading system for the duration of the term.

The Grading Contract:

Because grades often promote an antagonistic classroom dynamic that can distract students and instructors from the real business of writing, this course will use a method of evaluation known as “contract grading.” Rather than exclusively rewarding students whose work fits an ideal image of quality writing, this method encourages responsible student behavior and provides an atmosphere conducive to the sorts of risks and experimentation necessary for growth as a writer. I will provide feedback on all of your assignments in the form of comments. These comments will not count against you; rather, they are an important resource for improving your writing. Read the comments carefully and come to me with any questions they bring up.

You are guaranteed a final course grade of a B if you meet all of the following conditions:

Be in class every day, on time. You are not guaranteed a B if you miss more than one week’s worth of classes (i.e., two [2] class periods). Extraordinary circumstances will be taken into consideration, but not after the fact. If you know that you will need to be absent in excess of two classes, see me as soon as possible. (Two tardies equals an absence.)

Come to each class period prepared with the materials and assignments required for that class session. This means that you should have a full, complete, and proofread draft for each workshop day and have any reading assignments completed thoroughly enough that you can contribute to a class discussion on the texts.

Late Assignments. All assignments must be turned in on time to receive a B. Extensions must be requested at least two days in advance of the due date, and only one extension for a major assignment will be granted. If you receive an extension and turn in the assignment by the time agreed upon, then your paper will not be considered late.

All small assignments and homework must be turned in on the day that they are due. You are allowed one exception (absent-mindedness, printer didn’t work, etc.) throughout the semester.

Sloppy work or failing performance on quizzes and homework constitutes a breach of contract.

Participate actively in class. Show an engagement with all in-class activities by contributing to class discussions, group assignments, presentations, etc. Ask questions if you do not understand an assigned task and see me during office hours if you have a problem with your group.

Provide helpful, thoughtful, and honest feedback to your peers during each draft workshop.

Prepare for and participate constructively in individual and group conferences with instructor.

Major assignments (i.e., feeders and unit projects) must meet the following requirements:

Revisions should be substantive. Reshape, extend, complicate, and/or clarify your ideas rather than simply edit, correct, and touch up.

Proofreading: final drafts must be virtually free of all spelling and mechanical errors.

Each assignment must meet the requirements outlined in the assignment sequences for each unit. They must show an active engagement with the topics, research methods, and writing techniques for that unit.

Check the Moodle site and your Berea email account regularly to keep track of assignments.

Maintain a constructive attitude to the semester’s work and remain respectful to peers and to the instructor at all times.

I fully believe that if you meet all of the above requirements, you will have improved significantly as a writer, and you will deserve a B (a grade higher than the average for GSTR 110 students). Should you fail to meet any of the conditions above, you will have breached the contract and your grade will fall below a B. Please let me know if you have any questions about the grading contract and your status on it.

Getting an A:

While achieving a B depends entirely on behavior, getting a higher grade depends on the quality of your final portfolio. At the end of the semester, you will turn in revised versions of your two best pieces (one feeder and on unit project) along with an introductory letter explaining why you’ve selected those two pieces and how you think that they are representative of your growth as a writer. If you have satisfied the above contract, the quality of your final portfolio will determine whether or not you receive a grade higher than a B.

Student Signature: __________________________________ Date:_________________[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]This website is a collaboration between Berea College professors Anne Bruder and Jason Cohen.
