We would like \u2014 love, really \u2014 all GSTR 110 students to achieve mastery over the following basic writing skills:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>understand what constitutes and be able to compose a thesis statement (we teach it as a cogent statement of argument);<\/li>\n<li>understand what constitutes and be able to compose topic sentences that guide readers through an argument and match the content of their respective paragraphs;<\/li>\n<li>understand what constitutes and be able to develop evidence that is credible and appropriate to the writer\u2019s claims;<\/li>\n<li>understand what constitutes and be able to compose probing and original analysis that appropriately matches the evidence deployed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In our classes, we spend days and weeks on each of the four goals above. No one goal receives a single lesson or day because these skills require iteration and an ongoing practice over the course of the first year. Moreover, we have found that students attain mastery over these goals in highly varied amounts of time. Thus, we make healthy use of one-on-one short conferences with students to practice these skills repeatedly. Likewise, your TA\/PL can partner with you to work with students individually on these specific skills.<\/p>\n<p>We believe that if students can master the four unofficial course goals above, they will be in a relatively good position to succeed in GSTR 210.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<em>This website is a collaboration between Berea College professors Anne Bruder and Jason Cohen. As you will notice throughout these webpages, our work here has been more about aggregation than original invention. We have made every attempt to give credit to other instructors and friends of other instructors. One of the joys of teaching is the generosity we all seem to show one another in sharing materials.
