I often find that students respond better to structured research across several stages. You might begin with a proposal stage that includes some preliminary bibliographic work, move on to a rough annotated bibliography, and then formalize the assignment by asking for a final version to be submitted ahead of the final project. Other approaches would of course present viable alternatives.

Annotated Bibliography Assignment

DUE:

Library Work Day:

An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles, and documents. Each citation is followed by a brief (usually about 150-300 word – aim for one to two solid paragraphs) descriptive and evaluative paragraph, also called the annotation. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited.

ASSIGNMENT

You need to find and evaluate at least 8 sources, including a mixture of primary and secondary materials, that will help you with your particular topic. Start by searching for sources that address the parameters of your topic, and, if you cannot find those, begin branching out to more general sources.

To complete the annotated bibliography in its final form, you will need to find several different kinds of sources that address your focus. For your finished product, you will need AT LEAST:

One reference source

Two monographs (that is, single-author books)

Three scholarly articles (that is, articles from library databases that include substantive footnotes)

Two reviews of one or more books, editions, performances, or another text you are using

To produce each annotation, follow these steps:

Briefly examine and review the actual item. Then, from those you’ve perused, choose the works that provide a variety of perspectives on your topic.

Cite the book, article, or document using MLA or Chicago style; order entries alphabetically by author’s last name.

Write a concise and tightly constructed annotation that describes the central theme and scope of the book, treatise, or article. Include one or more sentences that (a) state the author’s thesis/main argument, (b) identify the major concern, method, approach, event, or topic used to justify the publication of the text, (c) explain how this work intersects with your topic, or what particular contribution the text offers your project, and (d) indicate any weaknesses or questions this text raises.

EXAMPLE OF a Shorter ANNOTATION

Open Society Justice Initiative. “Globalizing Torture: CIA Secret Detention and Extraordinary Rendition.” Open Society Foundations, 2013. Web. 24 Nov. 2014.

This source is the most current out of all my sources and adds some new information, such as the involvement of other countries and the detainment of innocent people. Specifically, there was the case where Khaled El-Masri was abducted at a border crossing by mistake when they confused him with someone with a similar name. The article gives 136 cases of individuals who were subjected to extraordinary rendition and enhanced interrogation, and detailed reports of 54 countries and their involvement with the program. It also takes a closer look at President Obama’s 2009 Executive Order.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]This website is a collaboration between Berea College professors Anne Bruder and Jason Cohen.
