The College was selected for\u00a0engaging its students, faculty and staff in meaningful service that achieves measurable results in the community. The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS)\u00a0has administered the honor roll since 2006.\u00a0The CNCS\u00a0honored Berea College as a leader for supporting:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>volunteer and service-learning activities and<\/li>\n<li>civic engagement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>View the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalservice.gov\/\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalservice.gov\/\">President\u2019s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Learn and Serve America Community-Based Research Innovation Grant<\/h2>\n<p>From 2007-2009, CELTS received a Learn and Serve America innovation grant for \u201cEnergy and Empowerment in an Appalachian County.\u201d This was\u00a0an initiative to study energy needs and assets in Madison County.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative was an\u00a0integrated three-year, community-based research project. It brought together several community partner organizations and academic departments with their specific expertise. The collaborative and coalition-based approach helped to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>produce data focused toward the goal\u00a0of improving financial security of low-income families in Madison County<\/li>\n<li>benefit\u00a0the environment by reducing demand for coal-based electricity<\/li>\n<li>empower\u00a0community members to become actively involved. Specifically, in transforming the policies, infrastructure, assumptions and behaviors that drive energy use in Kentucky today.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Learn more about the work done through the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.berea.edu\/celts\/learn-serve-america-community-based-research-innovation-grant\/\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/legacy.berea.edu\/celts\/learn-serve-america-community-based-research-innovation-grant\/\">Learn and Serve America Community-Based Research Innovation Gran<\/a>t.<\/p>\n<h2>Learn and Serve America Consortium Grant<\/h2>\n<p>From 2003 through 2006, CELTS and Berea College participated in a three-year Learn and Serve America Consortium Grant.\u00a0The grant was entitled\u00a0\u201cInstitutionalizing Service-Learning: Empowering Stakeholders.\u201d\u00a0 Six colleges and universities across the country participated in the consortium.\u00a0It was led by and funded through Tulane University\u2019s Office of Service-Learning. The grant facilitated the development of several of our most dynamic service-learning programs, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Faculty Seminars in Service-Learning<\/li>\n<li>Service-Learning Support Grants<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Through annual site visits and meetings at Tulane, the grant provided assistance in strategic planning and assessment.\u00a0It also provided valuable opportunities for networking and sharing ideas with the representatives of the other member institutions.<\/p>\n<h2>Recognition for Outstanding Service-Learning Program<\/h2>\n<p><em>US News and World Report<\/em>\u00a0recognized Berea College one of most outstanding programs in Service-Learning in the nation.<\/p>\n<h2>Berea College received Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement<\/h2>\n<p>Berea College was\u00a0recognized with this honor in 2008. It\u00a0is given to a select number of colleges and universities\u00a0closely engaged with their communities through:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>curricular engagement,<\/li>\n<li>outreach and<\/li>\n<li>partnerships.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On behalf of the College, CELTS led the application process for this honor.\u00a0Our students\u2019 work in community service and engagement was key in receiving the award.<\/p>\n<h2>Learn and Serve America Grant Funds Community Partner Service-Learning Seminar<\/h2>\n<p>CELTS received a Learn and Serve America Grant through Kentucky Campus Compact.\u00a0This provided funding for the first Berea College Community Partner Seminar in Service-Learning.
