Each Bonner Scholar must have a labor position in service either at the College or in the community. Additionally, Bonners must complete two Summers of Service. Here, they spend seven weeks engaged in regional, national, or international communities beyond Berea. For most Bonners, the commitment to service goes well beyond requirements. The first-year experience enables Bonners to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>safely explore their strengths and weaknesses<\/li>\n<li>discover their leadership style in a variety of roles<\/li>\n<li>develop leadership and programming skills<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>First Years work on a team of five guided by an upper-level student serving as Program Coordinator. By working in these particular teams, the First Year Bonner Scholars focus primarily on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>student development,<\/li>\n<li>direct service\u00a0and<\/li>\n<li>advocacy through the\u00a0programs they plan and execute.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>Sophomore Year and Beyond<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1142 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/legacy.berea.edu\/celts\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/09\/IMG_3582-300x225.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/legacy.berea.edu\/celts\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/09\/IMG_3582-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/legacy.berea.edu\/celts\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/09\/IMG_3582-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/legacy.berea.edu\/celts\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/09\/IMG_3582-1536x1152.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/legacy.berea.edu\/celts\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/09\/IMG_3582.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Beginning in the sophomore year, Bonners have the opportunity to choose the labor positions they wish to have.\u00a0 Each spring, upper-level Bonners apply to work in service positions on and off campus.\u00a0 We encourage upperclassmen to pursue positions that meet a vocational interest or personal passion. As Bonners grow and develop, they often assume leadership roles within their chosen organization. They may work independently or supervise other student leaders.\u00a0In each case, they focus\u00a0on making a contribution to our campus or local community.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>CELTS Sponsored Programs<\/h2>\n<p>Besides being the home of the Bonner Scholars Program, CELTS\u00a0serves as both home and program site for many\u00a0service organizations staffed and led by students, many of whom are Bonners.\u00a0 (See\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.berea.edu\/celts\/community-service-programs\/volunteer-opportunities\/\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/legacy.berea.edu\/celts\/community-service-programs\/volunteer-opportunities\/\">programs<\/a>\u00a0for descriptions of CELTS service opportunities.)[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>Campus-Based Service<\/h2>\n<p>Service happens all over campus and Bonners are often involved. In recent years Bonners have taken on several\u00a0roles across campus including the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Counselor\/Mentor with Upward Bound, Gear Up, or the Black Cultural Center<\/li>\n<li>Student Advocate for Local Food Initiatives<\/li>\n<li>Coordinator of the Diversity Peer Education Team<\/li>\n<li>Resource Liaison for area Small Businesses\/Non-Profits<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>Community-Based Opportunities<\/h2>\n<p>Bonners support the work of a variety of community partners in and around Berea. Their contributions make a difference in Berea, in the region, and beyond.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Family Resource Center Program Assistant<\/li>\n<li>Sponsorship Coordinator with Save the Children<\/li>\n<li>Program Assistant with Berea Food Bank<\/li>\n<li>Legislative\/Research Assistant with the Kentucky Environmental Foundation or Kentuckians for the Commonwealth<\/li>\n<li>Education Assistant-New Opportunity School for Women<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>Summer Service<\/h2>\n<p>Bonner Summer of Service is an opportunity to reach far beyond campus boundaries to experience the world and broaden one\u2019s capacity to learn and serve.<\/p>\n<p>Each Bonner can access up to $2500 to help fund their project. Then you are limited only by imagination, commitment, and your desire to learn.
