The Berea Undergraduate Research Symposium (BURS) is hosted every year by the Chemistry Department and the other departments in Division I (Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Nursing). Participation is open to all Berea College students. In recent years we have structured the symposium with both talks and poster presentations as well as a plenary session. In 2019 we introduced a second oral presentation category for internship presentations that might not fit in the standard research presentation model. Both types of oral presentations are scheduled for 12-15 minutes with 5 minutes for questions/speaker transition. Posters may be submitted from various fields across campus (previous posters from chemistry, biology, physics, psychology, sociology, education, African American Studies, economics, industrial arts, computer science, physical education & health, and mathematics). The format for these will be a 4-foot wide by a 3-foot tall poster that will be hung after poster stands are assembled and in place on Thursday night or Friday morning. All students who pursued substantial research projects over the previous year are encouraged to present their research. For samples of posters from past BURS, follow this link.
Registration for BURS opens normally in September each year with BURS held on the 2nd or 3rd weekend in October. For 2022, the registration deadline will be October 14th. Follow this link for registration details. Many students will also want to register for the Kentucky Academy of Sciences Annual Meeting held in November each year. Another opportunity to present research is the UK Department of Chemistry Regional Undergraduate Poster Competition.
In the tabs below, you can see the various BURS programs from previous years.

NASA’s First Exoplanet Finding mission – Kepler/K2
Abstract – The first planet orbiting a star other than our sun was confirmed in 1989. For the next 20 years, the majority of exoplanets we discovered were large planets orbiting very close to their stars. In 2009, NASA launched the Kepler space telescope for the primary purpose of finding planets around other stars. For 4 years it observed one part of the sky nearly continuously. After the failure of two reaction wheels, the spacecraft was no longer able to observe the same part of the sky, but spacecraft engineers developed a novel operation mode that allowed the spacecraft to observe an additional 20 regions along the ecliptic plane for 80 days at a time (aka the K2 mission). During its 9.5 years of operation, the Kepler spacecraft produced an unprecedented data set of high-precision, uninterrupted brightness measurements of over 500,000 stars. This transformational dataset has established that planets are ubiquitous in our galaxy and revealed the diversity of planetary systems. In addition, Kepler data has illuminated the interior workings of stars and the earliest moments of a supernova. I will provide a review of Kepler’s top results, a tour through recent results, and discuss emerging results and future directions.

19th annual Berea Undergraduate Research and Internship Symposium (BURIS)
The 19th annual Berea Undergraduate Research Symposium (BURS) was held the same weekend as the Berea College Trustees visit campus and this year it coincides with the official opening of the new Cargill Science Building on Saturday, October 20th, 2018. This has been organized by the science programs in the past but participation is open to all members of the college community. In recent years we have structured the symposium with both talks and poster presentations as well as a plenary session.
The program for Fall 2018 will be held on Friday, October 19th, and Saturday, October 20th. The 2018 BURS will begin with an opening plenary talk by Jacqulyn Noronha-Hostler on “The Quest for Nature’s First and Most Perfect Liquid” in the Yahng Center (MAC 455). After a short break, we will have student oral presentations starting at 2PM (MAC 356, 357, 551, 506) and a plenary talk entitled “Breathing the Earth” at 4PM by Elizabeth Cottrell of the Smithsonian Institution . BURS will continue with student poster presentations and other departmental activities the following morning (Saturday) and the official opening ceremony for the new Cargill Science Building at 2:00 pm and followed by a convocation delivered by Dr. Mae Jemison, first African American woman to travel to space on the Shuttle Endeavor at 3:00 pm.
Cottrell Plenary Title: Breathing the Earth
Abstract – When you hear the word “volcano” what comes to your mind? Volcanoes are windows to Earth’s deep interior, revealing to us what lies beyond depths accessible to human exploration. Volcanoes shape the landscape, the hydrosphere, and human civilization. From natural disasters to climate change and from diamonds to Dr. Evil, we will explore volcano mysteries together.
On Friday (10/19) we will start at 2:00 PM with oral presentation sessions (15 minutes each) in the Cargill Science building planetarium room. Following the oral session we will have a plenary talk by Elizabeth Cottrell at 4:00 for 45 minutes with 10 minutes after for questions. The next day (Saturday, 10/20) we will have building tours from 9AM – 1PM, an additional oral session as well as a poster session in the morning at 9:30-11:00 am. There will also be planetarium shows at 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm. With posters from various fields (previous posters from chemistry, biology, physics, psychology, sociology, education, African American Studies, economics, industrial arts, computer science, physical education & health, and mathematics). All students who pursued substantial research projects over the previous year are encouraged to present their research. Application of 3D Microtissue Chip Technology to Study Composite Skeletal Tissue Physiology: Microgravity-Induced Pathologies and Drug Screening
Abstract – Skeletal disorders, including osteoporosis and osteoarthritis, present a significant disease burden for the general population, and are specifically associated with space flight, such as accelerated bone loss. We have recently developed a 3D microphysiological system (MPS), utilizing adult stem cells, biomimetic materials, and 3D printing technologies, that mimics osteochondral tissues. The microfluidically perfused MPS bioreactor can accommodate both stem cell-engineered tissues and primary osteochondral tissues, and is amenable to high-throughput screening and testing of potential therapeutics for bone and cartilage health. The MPS is particularly suitable as an on-board experimental model to study the accelerated skeletal pathologies observed during space flight, as well as a high utility system applicable for predictive toxicology and drug development for skeletal tissues, both on the ground and in space.
We will start at 2:30 PM with two simultaneous oral presentation sessions (15 minutes each) in rooms 101 and 106 of the Science Building. The sessions are grouped by theme as much as possible. The poster session starts at 3:00 and is held in the lobby of the science building with posters from various fields (previous posters from chemistry, biology, physics, psychology, sociology, education, African American Studies, economics, industrial arts, computer science, physical education & health, and mathematics). All students who pursued substantial research projects over the previous year are encouraged to present their research.

Using science to drive a global revolution in production agriculture: Defining the tools for the future
Abstract – The challenge of building an agricultural system that will allow the world to sustainably support a population of more than 9 billion will require some staggering technological changes. Fortunately, our understanding of the basic biological mechanisms that control agricultural production are continuing to provide new tools that will allow for more efficient food production systems with less overall waste and environmental impact. However, the challenge will be to reconstruct our agricultural base and technical tool box in a way that the most beneficial technological advances can be rapidly adopted. This presentation will describe some recent scientific advances that promise to change the way we view agricultural production and describe the pathways and barriers to their implementation.
We will start at 2:30 PM with two simultaneous oral presentation sessions (15 minutes each) in rooms 101 and 106 of the Science Building. The sessions are grouped by theme as much as possible. The poster session starts at 3:30 and is held in the lobby of the science building with posters from various fields (previous posters from chemistry, biology, physics, psychology, sociology, education, African American Studies, economics, industrial arts, computer science, physical education & health, and mathematics).
