{"id":535,"date":"2016-08-24T22:16:25","date_gmt":"2016-08-24T22:16:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.berea.edu\/chm\/?page_id=535"},"modified":"2018-06-01T12:24:14","modified_gmt":"2018-06-01T16:24:14","slug":"chemistry-laboratory-checklist","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/legacy.berea.edu\/chm\/chemistry-labor-program\/chemistry-laboratory-checklist\/","title":{"rendered":"Chemistry Laboratory Checklist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Before students arrive in the laboratory the following tasks shall be completed<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As students enter the classroom for pre-laboratory lecture, the <strong>teaching assistants<\/strong> will <strong>check each notebook<\/strong> for a completed pre-laboratory write-up. \u00a0This should include the title, purpose, procedure and other reagent tables.<\/li>\n<li>Any <strong>chemicals<\/strong> left out\u00a0from a prior laboratory session (on the balances or in the hoods) <strong>should be put away<\/strong> or disposed of appropriately.<\/li>\n<li>Laboratory <strong>drawers<\/strong> for shall be <strong>unlocked<\/strong> (making sure all other sections are locked).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Trash cans<\/strong> shall be <strong>emptied<\/strong> in the laboratory if more than half full.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Eye wash station<\/strong> shall be <strong>tested<\/strong> to remove impurities from the line.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Waste bottle<\/strong> shall be <strong>prepared<\/strong> with appropriate labels before students enter the laboratory.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wash bottles<\/strong> shall be <strong>filled<\/strong> with water, acetone, and other appropriate solvents.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chemicals<\/strong> for the days experiment shall be <strong>placed in the appropriate locations<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Check to be sure there is at least <strong>one box of each size gloves<\/strong> on hand in the lab.<\/li>\n<li>Check to see <strong>appropriate size filter paper<\/strong> is available if students will be using any during the laboratory session.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>During laboratory session<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Teaching assistants<\/strong> are expected to <strong>move<\/strong> around the classroom and <strong>interact with<\/strong> students.<\/li>\n<li>If glassware is broken, you shall replace it for the student.<\/li>\n<li>As teaching assistants move around the laboratory, they shall be aware of <strong>looking for safety violations<\/strong> and help students fix these problems (goggles, aprons, gloves, inappropriate clothing, etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At the conclusion of laboratory, the following tasks shall be completed<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Waste containers<\/strong> will be kept in the laboratory for another section or another week if appropriate or they shall be <strong>taken to the waste disposal cabinet<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Unused chemicals<\/strong> will be kept in the laboratory for another section or another week if appropriate or they <strong>shall be taken to the stockroom<\/strong> if they are useful in the future or disposed of if they are not.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Consolidate chemicals<\/strong>. As example, there is no reason to keep 67\u00a0mL of a 1000 mL bottle of 0.15M HCl. \u00a0In most cases student prepared solutions are not useful beyond an academic year and should not be retained.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Empty trash cans<\/strong> if they have been filled in the laboratory session.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure all of the <strong>hoods<\/strong> have been <strong>cleaned<\/strong> and any common <strong>equipment<\/strong> is <strong>returned<\/strong> to correct storage areas.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Unplug all heaters, vacuum pumps and\/or stir plates<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Before students arrive in the laboratory the following tasks shall be completed As students enter the classroom for pre-laboratory lecture, the teaching assistants will check each notebook for a completed pre-laboratory write-up. \u00a0This should include the title, purpose, procedure and other reagent tables.
