{"id":559,"date":"2022-08-30T17:48:23","date_gmt":"2022-08-30T17:48:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.berea.edu\/covid-19\/?p=559"},"modified":"2022-08-31T17:49:44","modified_gmt":"2022-08-31T17:49:44","slug":"covid-19-update-august-30-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/legacy.berea.edu\/covid-19\/2022\/08\/30\/covid-19-update-august-30-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"COVID-19 Update: August 30, 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dear Bereans,<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the\u00a0update for\u00a0Tuesday,\u00a0August 30,\u00a02022.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donation account for Berea colleagues<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several Partners for Education staff members were directly affected by the flooding in eastern Kentucky.\u00a0 The damage to the homes, vehicles, and other property of our colleagues was significant, with some experiencing a near total loss of their home and possessions.\u00a0 If you would like to help these Bereans directly,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/partnersstage1.wpengine.com\/\">please visit this link<\/a>\u00a0and look for the \u201cEastern Kentucky Flood Fund\u201d button. \u00a0Individuals can make donations up to $5,000 via this site.\u00a0 If anyone wants to make a donation greater than $5,000, please\u00a0contact Penny Jordan at\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:jordanp@berea.edu\">jordanp@berea.edu<\/a>\u00a0or (859) 985-2602 for a check or ACH donation.\u00a0\u00a0While\u00a0these donations are not tax-deductible, they will provide much-needed support to these individuals and their families.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employees are also reminded that everyone is permitted up to two additional vacation days through the end of September in order to engage in flood relief work; I have heard that a number of Bereans have already done that.\u00a0 Thanks so very much!<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quarantine update<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of yesterday, we have four students in quarantine having tested positive, two on campus and two at their homes. We have a total of 3 on-campus employees quarantining with positive tests and 5 positive employees who work remotely.\u00a0 The on-campus Bereans who have tested positive work in the following buildings\/areas: Lincoln Hall, Stephenson Hall and Fairchild.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kentucky update<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The number of new reported cases in the Commonwealth continues to hover in the 12,000 to 14,000 per week range:\u00a0 14,312 vs.12,381 last week, vs.14,409 the week before.\u00a0 That is about 2000 new cases per day.\u00a0 The test positivity rate remains very high; for the past week it was 20.07% compared to 18.96% last week. \u00a0The number of deaths in the state is holding steady, in the 60 to 70 range per week (i.e., about 10\/day) in the Commonwealth.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID-19 Community Level<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Madison County\u2019s COVID community level remains in the \u201cYellow\u201d designation, and our neighboring counties, Jackson, Rockcastle and Estill, are in \u201cYellow,\u201d too.\u00a0 Overall, we seem to be in a bit of a holding pattern state-wide.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Change in masking policy<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Based on the above information, the AC has decided that we can lift the requirement for masking in indoor congregate settings<\/strong>, returning to the policy that was in effect at the end of last term.\u00a0\u00a0At this point indoor masking will be <strong><u>required only for mass gatherings of 50 or more<\/u><\/strong>.\u00a0 As before, faculty and labor supervisors are authorized to establish masking requirements in spaces they are responsible for.\u00a0 This policy change is effective tomorrow, Wednesday, August 31.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some students have been required to mask in all settings thanks to exemptions and other aspects of their particular status. \u00a0These requirements will continue until further notice.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lyle Roelofs, President<br \/>\nBerea College<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dear Bereans, This is the\u00a0update for\u00a0Tuesday,\u00a0August 30,\u00a02022.
