{"id":564,"date":"2022-09-12T17:57:11","date_gmt":"2022-09-12T17:57:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.berea.edu\/covid-19\/?p=564"},"modified":"2022-09-20T18:09:53","modified_gmt":"2022-09-20T18:09:53","slug":"covid-19-update-september-12-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/legacy.berea.edu\/covid-19\/2022\/09\/12\/covid-19-update-september-12-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"COVID-19 Update: September 12, 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dear Bereans,<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the\u00a0update for\u00a0Monday,\u00a0September 12,\u00a02022.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am sending this update out a little earlier in the week than lately because of some challenging developments and the resulting necessity to make a policy change.\u00a0 (See below for the details of the changed circumstances pertaining to the College and the immediate area.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of a surge of cases among students and the fact that the situation has also deteriorated in Madison County, the AC has decided on changes to our masking policy, effective immediately.\u00a0 \u00a0Because transmission among students is occurring in some classroom settings and seems to be concentrated in some residence halls:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li>Masking will be\u00a0required\u00a0in all classroom settings<\/li>\n<li>Masking will be\u00a0required\u00a0in all residence hall settings, except in a student\u2019s individual room<\/li>\n<li>Masking will be\u00a0required\u00a0in all music ensemble practices and performances<\/li>\n<li>Masking will be\u00a0recommended\u00a0for all Bereans in any indoor congregate settings<\/li>\n<li>Masking is\u00a0strongly suggested\u00a0for all Bereans in any off-campus public settings<\/li>\n<li>Masking will be required for all visitors at any campus events.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quarantine update<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have experienced a surge of student cases over the weekend.\u00a0 At present we have 18 students who have tested positive and are quarantining, three off campus and the others on campus.\u00a0 As of this morning, we have four on-campus employees quarantining with positive tests and three positive employees who work remotely.\u00a0 The on-campus Bereans who have tested positive work in Draper Hall, Lincoln Hall, Danforth Technology and Facilities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Kentucky update is not available, as the Commonwealth is only publishing its statistics once per week late in the day on Mondays.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID-19 Community Level<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of last Friday Madison County\u2019s COVID community level has returned to the \u201cRed\u201d designation, and all of our neighboring counties have gone \u201cRed\u201d too.\u00a0 Overall, more counties are \u201cRed\u201d state-wide.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaccination<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The one bright spot I have to share is that the \u201cupdated booster\u201d vaccinations have just become available locally.\u00a0 These updated shots provide good protection against the omicron subvariants, which have been noteworthy for their ability to circumvent the original vaccination formulation.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/coronavirus-covid-19-update-fda-authorizes-moderna-pfizer-biontech-bivalent-covid-19-vaccines-use\">For more information about the new boosters, see here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Moderna version is authorized for any person 18 years or older and the Pfizer for any person 12 years or older; in both cases it should be at least 2 months since you received your last vaccination shot.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am pleased to say that Mrs. Roelofs and I received the updated booster this morning.\u00a0 Walgreens has appointments available, and I assume that other pharmacies do as well.\u00a0 The shots are free.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lyle Roelofs, President<br \/>\nBerea College<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two quick clarifications\u2026<\/p>\n<ol style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li>The mask requirement does extend to dining, except when you are eating.<\/li>\n<li>Also, the prior requirement of masks in all mass gatherings remains in place.\u00a0 So, for example, masking is required in convo and in any other indoor activity involving 50 or more persons.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We appreciate all your efforts to help keep everyone safe and so that the College can continue to operate!<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pr.
