We assist<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0students, faculty, and staff with all types of writing at any stage of the writing process.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Trained c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">onsultants\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">support\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">writers in understanding assignments, brainstorming, organization, flow, language mechanics, and APA, MLA, and Chicago style formatting, and citation. From personal writing to lab reports, consultants\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">work closely with students (individually, in groups, and even in classes) to help them develop and answer their writing questions, big or small.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Writing Resources\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">workplace\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is comprised of skilled student\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">workers\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(10-hour\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">primar<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ies<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, 5-hour\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">secondaries<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">)\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">who not only<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0possess\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">strong writing abilities<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0but also the desire to continually develop those abilities<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, especially in community with others<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Successful consultants also have the maturity,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sensitivity<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and flexibility to help fellow student writers with a variety of projects.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0To support consultants\u2019 growth as writers, workers, and Bereans, employment at Writing Resources is structured in this way:\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Consultants hold scheduled meetings with student writers\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">throughout each week\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and meet regularly with other Writing Resources consultants (one-on-one and in groups) to gain practice as consultants and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">collaborative colleagues. Weekly labor meetings provide ongoing training on shared concerns and center-wide projects. Each school year kicks off with a Writing Resources-wide orientation to acclimate new workers.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">New consultants are expected to\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">enroll in GST 286: Tutoring\/Writing Pedagogy: Theory and Praxis, a .25-credit (1 hour weekly) practicum course that outlines basic techniques for supporting college-level writers and critical research on teaching and learning.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Consultants who successfully complete this course and their year-long Writing Resources contract will be lifetime certified as Level 1 Tutors through the College Reading &amp; Learning Association\u2019s International Tutor Training Program. In the fall semester, each TA-PL collaborates with a faculty member\/academic advisor teaching GSTR 110. TA-PLs work as writing TAs for their assigned GSTR 110 sections, helping students develop study strategies and college-level writing skills. TA-PLs also serve as peer leaders, acclimating students to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the college environment and advising them as they develop general academic skills, explore majors, and utilize campus resources. In the spring, TA-PLs continue this work, <\/span>supporting a section of GSTR 110 or 210 (and often working with a new faculty member).<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">TA-PLs are critical to the success of first-year students at Berea. TA-PLs develop unique bonds with the students and faculty in their courses. They also work closely with others in the TA-PL cohort, learning\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">with\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">folks who are similarly invested in sharing their experience and knowledge. One of the ultimate goals of the TA-PL program is to work together to think up creative learning opportunities for students\u2014in the classroom and out. The program also seeks to help TA-PLs hone their\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">own<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0communication skills, which we hope will serve them in their time at Berea and beyond.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">For these reasons,<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:252}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\"><span data-contrast=\"none\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">The TA-PL program is comprised of students who have demonstrated not only a history of academic success, but also emotional maturity, initiative, and a strong understanding of the skills and resources incoming students need to succeed at Berea.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">The work of a TA-PL\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">(typically, 12-hour\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">primar<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ies<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> only for a year-long position) <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"><span data-contrast=\"none\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">takes many forms: regular one-on-one meetings with their assigned faculty member; one-on-one meetings with students (typically during regularly held TA hours); group meetings with students; group meetings with other TA\/PLs (labor meetings).
