My seventh-grade teacher first mentioned Berea to me as she encouraged me to attend college. I tucked that bit of information away, but I stayed in Western Kentucky. I moved to Lexington to attend the University of Kentucky in 2000, and I decided to stay in the region. Although I had been a social worker for many years, as I completed my doctoral work in education, I came to better understand the influence classroom teachers have in the lives of children.<\/p>\n<p>I view my work in helping to prepare teachers as an extension of my work on behalf of children. It has been forty years, since Miss Hines told me about Berea College.
