Cargill Natural Sciences and Health Building, 237<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">CPO 2195<br \/>\nEmail: <a href=\"mailto:jon_saderholm@berea.edu\">jon_saderholm@berea.edu<\/a><br \/>\nPhone: 859-985-3101<br \/>\nFax: 859-985-3164<\/p>\n<h2>Spring 2022<\/h2>\n<h3>Office Hours<\/h3>\n<p>Mon\/Tues\/Wed\/Thur: 9 &#8211; 11:00 a.m.<br \/>\nMon\/Wed: 2:40 &#8211; 5:00 p.m.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;18&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3>Class Schedule<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>EDS 215\u00a0 (Mon\/Wed: 12:40 p.m. &#8211; 2:30 p.m.)<\/li>\n<li>EDS 338\u00a0 (Tue\/Thur: 1:00 p.m. &#8211; 2:50 p.m.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Degrees<\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction , University of Louisville, 2007<\/li>\n<li>M.Ed. in Mathematics Education , University of Louisville, 1999<\/li>\n<li>B.A. in Physics and Mathematics , Berea College, 1987<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Certification<\/h2>\n<p>National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) Certification in Adolescent\/Young (AYA) Adult Science (1999 \u20132009)<\/p>\n<h2>Biography<\/h2>\n<p>Our family ended up on a farm at the end of a 1-mile long gravel road in south central Kentucky in 1977 as I was about to enter 8<sup>th<\/sup> grade.\u00a0 Our parents were part of the \u201cback to the land\u201d diaspora that drew many suburban families to the country.\u00a0 Needless to say, they weren\u2019t cut out for the lifestyle, so the kids ended up being prime candidates for Berea College.\u00a0 All four of us attended.\u00a0 Three of us met our spouses here.\u00a0 Two are on its faculty.\u00a0 Thank you, Berea.<\/p>\n<p>My major was going to be either art or physics.\u00a0 Teaching was nowhere on the list.\u00a0 I chose physics because I figured it would provide a job.\u00a0 Soon, I picked up a mathematics major as well.\u00a0 I was blessed to be offered a labor position in the Physics Department from my first term.\u00a0 I was the Astronomy TA while I took the course.\u00a0 (I read ahead in the text.)\u00a0 During my junior year, I began to worry about my post-Berea options\u2014that is until I had an epiphany.\u00a0 I had been doing the thing I loved for my entire time at Berea \u2014 teaching.\u00a0 Consequently, I took a 5<sup>th<\/sup> year and also earned teacher certification.<\/p>\n<p>My first job was teaching Physical Science at Sue Bennet Junior College in Somerset, Kentucky.\u00a0 After two years at Sue Bennet, my wife and I took jobs at Sandy Spring Friends School in northern Maryland.\u00a0 SSFS is a Quaker boarding school.\u00a0 (We\u2019re Quakers.)\u00a0 During our five years at SSFS, our first two sons were born.\u00a0 In 1994, we moved to Bloomfield Kentucky and started teaching math and physics at Spencer County High School.\u00a0 In 1998, I earned National Board Certification in high school science.\u00a0 I was the first teacher in Kentucky to earn this certification.\u00a0 At the time, nation-wide only 0.5% of teachers were National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs).\u00a0 Immediately afterward, I became active as a mentor for other teachers pursuing the certification.\u00a0 Soon thereafter, I was elected president of our new professional association, the Kentucky Association for National Board Certified Teachers.<\/p>\n<p>In the spring of 2004, I decided to leave the teaching profession to pursue a graduate degree in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Louisville.\u00a0 I remember thinking at the time, \u201cI\u2019d like to get a job at a school like Berea.\u201d\u00a0 When I was finishing my Ph.D in the spring of 2007, Berea\u2019s Education Studies advertised for a tenure-track faculty position.\u00a0 Needless to say, I applied.\u00a0 And now you\u2019re reading this bio.<\/p>\n<p>A current focus of my scholarship is evaluating and researching the effectiveness of STEM professional development, including designing effective teacher preparation programs.\u00a0 Another is creating structures and curricula for our STEM Outreach Center in the new Margaret A.
