Through practical, hands-on experiences in traditional and contemporary facilities, the department strives to cultivate critical and creative problem-solvers with the capabilities to identify, analyze, and implement design solutions as responsible citizens of the world.<\/p>\n<h3>Areas of Concentration<\/h3>\n<p>The Engineering Technologies and Applied Design Department offers three areas of concentration:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Technology Management<\/li>\n<li>Artisan Studies<\/li>\n<li>Engineering and Technology Education (grades 5-12)<\/li>\n<li>A general degree is also offered for those students interested in multiple majors\/minors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The objective of these offerings is to provide students with a broad professional and liberal-arts education necessary for entrance into careers or into professional or graduate schools. (More on Concentrations below.)<\/p>\n<h3>Courses<\/h3>\n<p>The course work provided includes, but is not limited to, these areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Appalachian Crafts<\/li>\n<li>Architecture<\/li>\n<li>Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM)<\/li>\n<li>Construction<\/li>\n<li>Design<\/li>\n<li>Electricity\/Electronics<\/li>\n<li>Energy and Power Systems<\/li>\n<li>Graphic Communication<\/li>\n<li>Manufacturing\/Production<\/li>\n<li>Material Processing\/Testing<\/li>\n<li>Photography<\/li>\n<li>Prototyping<\/li>\n<li>Quality Control<\/li>\n<li>Videography<\/li>\n<li>Woodworking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Department Emphasis<\/h3>\n<p>Throughout the department, emphasis is placed on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Application<\/li>\n<li>Design<\/li>\n<li>Problem Solving<\/li>\n<li>Quality<\/li>\n<li>Research<\/li>\n<li>Sustainability<\/li>\n<li>Technology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When declaring a major in ETAD, a student may select one of the three concentration options (or the general degree if interested in multiple minors\/majors).<\/p>\n<h3>Concentrations<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Technology Management concentration<\/strong> prepares the student for a variety of leadership positions in a wide range of technology-based career fields. This department is designed to give the student a strong background in design, production, communications, and power\/energy technologies, combined with a study of management strategies and procedures. Students completing this department may pursue careers that include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Design Engineering<\/li>\n<li>Industrial Engineering<\/li>\n<li>Manufacturing Engineering<\/li>\n<li>Production Management<\/li>\n<li>Quality Control<\/li>\n<li>Sustainable Development<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Artisan Studies concentration<\/strong> prepares the student for a variety of career options in a field\/subject of specific interest. This department is designed to give the student a strong background in design, graphic communications, photography\/video, Appalachian crafts, production, and power\/energy technologies, combined with a study of management strategies and procedures focused more for the artisan. Students completing this department may pursue careers that include a variety of options, but many are interested in owning their own business. Students completing this department may pursue careers that include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Entrepreneurship<\/li>\n<li>Graphic Artistry<\/li>\n<li>Metal Working\/Welding<\/li>\n<li>Photography<\/li>\n<li>Woodworking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Engineering and Technology Education concentration<\/strong> prepares students interested in gaining certification to teach in the area of engineering and technology education (grades 5-12).
