{"id":496,"date":"2013-01-25T16:03:24","date_gmt":"2013-01-25T16:03:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.berea.edu\/labor-program-office\/?page_id=496"},"modified":"2022-02-06T19:52:10","modified_gmt":"2022-02-07T00:52:10","slug":"endowed-labor-awards","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/legacy.berea.edu\/labor-program-office\/endowed-labor-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Endowed Labor Awards &#038; Criteria"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Exemplary students can be nominated for Endowed Labor Awards by labor supervisors.\u00a0\u00a0 The nomination process occurs in the spring term each year and notice is given through campus e-mail encouraging supervisors to nominate worthy students.\u00a0 Students should also give consideration to the two awards in which they can compete\u00a0or make nominations for.\u00a0 They are described at the bottom of this page.\u00a0\u00a0 Each endowed award varies in value\u00a0 with some having a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place cash awards disbursements. \u00a0 The total amount awarded in all areas typically total $19,318 and is subject to change depending on the cash value of each endowment. \u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Note: Contact the Labor Office for current amounts being awarded in each area.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">Anna Mae and Phyllis Shumaker Labor Award<\/h2>\n<p>The Anna Mae and Phyllis Shumaker Labor Award, derived from the endowed E. R. Brann Fund, was named in 2004 to honor two sisters who served Berea College for many years and were devoted to the students who worked in their offices.\u00a0 Anna Mae worked in the Treasurer\u2019s Office while Phyllis worked in the Registrar\u2019s Office.\u00a0 Mrs. Helen Brann requested changing the Helen Brann Prize as an opportunity to celebrate the student labor program at Berea and to honor the service and dedication of the Shumakers as a symbol of all other workers on campus.<\/p>\n<p>Eligibility:\u00a0 Recipient(s) must be graduating senior(s).<\/p>\n<p>Criteria:\u00a0 Recipient(s) have demonstrated in <strong>office work.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High levels of responsibility<\/li>\n<li>Dependability<\/li>\n<li>Self-motivation and initiative<\/li>\n<li>Enthusiasm about work<\/li>\n<li>High quality of work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Danforth Creative Effort Prizes<\/h2>\n<p>Danforth Creative Effort Prizes were awarded many years from gifts provided by Mr. William H. Danforth for creative ideals in some field of labor at Berea College.\u00a0 In 1968, the Danforth Foundation provided an endowment of $7,500, the income from which is used for the Danforth Creative Effort Prizes.\u00a0 The ideas must be original, tried in the program, and save more money than they cost.\u00a0 These prizes honor students whose products of imagination and effort have importance and impact beyond the worker\u2019s span of time at Berea.<\/p>\n<h2>Todd, Russell I Award<\/h2>\n<p>In 1966, Dr. Russell Todd spoke at Labor Day on the topic of \u201cWise use of Leisure Time.\u201d\u00a0 He established this award at that time to honor the student who makes the most of their leisure time.\u00a0 The award was endowed in 1988.<\/p>\n<h2>Evans, Wilson and Ellen Best &#8211; Above and Beyond the Call of Duty<\/h2>\n<p>William B. Evans established this award in 2000.\u00a0 The award is given to two students (one male, one female) who have performed above and beyond the requirements of their labor positions.\u00a0 The student should exemplify the Learning Goals of the Labor Program and make the department environment an enjoyable place to work.\u00a0 Historically, this award was given to students who had worked the most hours and earned the most money.<\/p>\n<h2>The William R. Ramsay Horizon Award<\/h2>\n<p>This award was established to honor William Ramsay&#8217;s vision of labor and learning at Berea College.\u00a0 It recognizes a first-year student who enthusiastically embraces the Labor Programas an integral component of Berea&#8217;s mission and whose work demonstrates great potential for the future.\u00a0 Recipients are presented with a copy of Shannon Wilson&#8217;s book <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Berea College: An Illustrated History<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2>Student Employee of the Year<\/h2>\n<p>This award is given to a student nominated by their supervisor, who shows characteristics in the following areas:\u00a0 reliability, quality of work, initiative, professionalism, uniqueness of contribution.\u00a0 The student who wins this award is nominated by Berea College for the MASEA Student Employee of the Year.<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">For Students ONLY<\/h1>\n<h2>Labor Day Photography Contest<\/h2>\n<p>This award was created to encourage students to \u201ctake a different look\u201d at labor.\u00a0 Any photograph showing Berea College labor is eligible.\u00a0 However, submissions that aren\u2019t Berea College labor <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">related will not<\/span><\/strong> be eligible.\u00a0 Only <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">two submissions<\/span><\/strong> per student will be accepted.\u00a0 All students must provide their name and B# on the back of the photograph.\u00a0 Digital copies are preferred.<\/p>\n<p>The winning entry may be used for Labor Program Office purposes printed materials, and the three finalists are displayed in the Labor Program Office.\u00a0 The award is funded by the James N. and Leila Cranford Hardy Fund.<\/p>\n<h2>Labor Supervisor of the Year<\/h2>\n<p>Members of the student body are asked to submit recommendations for the <strong>Outstanding Labor Supervisor<\/strong> on campus for the year 2021-2022.\u00a0 The award and\/or awards will be presented in the form of a gift certificate and plaque.\u00a0 Nomination criteria is detailed via an email and hard copies sent to the Student
