The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures (DEALL) in the College of Humanities at The Ohio State University is one of the largest programs of its kind in the continental United States. It offers undergraduate degrees in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean language and literature. The graduate program offers the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in both Chinese and Japanese in the areas of literature, linguistics, and language pedagogy, as well as Advanced Chinese language and culture through the Chinese Flagship Program. DEALL’s language programs country in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Tibetan offer one of the most extensive and diverse curricula in the. They include innovative programs such as the Individualized Instruction track, the intensive track, offered throughout the regular academic year, as well as the summer intensive track. DEALL also offers an impressive array of specialized courses in the summer including intensive workshops designed to instruct teachers of Chinese and Japanese in the art of language teaching.
East Asian Studies M.A. Program

also designing your own personalized interdisciplinary study of East Asia?
The Ohio State University’s Interdisciplinary East Asian Studies Master of Arts Program
allows you to do just that, placing heavy emphasis on interdisciplinary study as well as the development of appropriate language skills as a foundation for work in related professional and academic careers.
Building on the rich resources of The Ohio State University, the program affords students the opportunity to study with 55 faculty in 17 disciplines and access to a superb and growing library collection of East Asian language materials and numerous study abroad opportunities.
Purpose
The Interdisciplinary Master of Arts in East Asian Studies is designed for students who desire concentrated training in East Asian language and culture. The degree prepares students for continuing study of East Asia in a discipline-specific Ph.D. program or for non-academic careers in:
• government or the military
• pre-college and community college education
• administration of non-profit institutions with related cultural missions
• the private sector in fields such as law, journalism, business, etc.
Program Requirements
The program requires 18 courses (90 credits). Because OSU is on a quarter system, students typically complete the 90 credits in two academic years. All students take the “Introduction to Graduate East Asian Studies” in their first year of study to learn broad theoretical and methodological issued associated with area studies perspectives. In addition, students choose one geographical area of East Asia (China,
Japan, or Korea) and a discipline of concentration. Students also take courses in other areas and/or disciplines. Students take the East Asian language of their choice during each quarter they are enrolled in the program, and are required to complete at least the third level of the language before graduation. In consultation with their M.A. advisory committee, students choose either a thesis or non-thesis track.
