The Berea College Board of Trustees has elected Dr. Yolanda “Yoli” M. Gallardo and Dr. Dwayne Compton to serve on the Berea College Board of Trustees.

Dr. Dwayne Compton has been elected to the Berea College Board of Trustees.
Dr. Gallardo holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary and bilingual education from the University of Arizona, a master’s degree in multicultural education from Northern Arizona University and a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction from Kansas State University.
Dr. Gallardo currently serves as dean of both the School of Education and the School of Leadership Studies at Gonzaga University. Prior to moving to Gonzaga, she served on the faculty at Berea College, holding the Robert Charles Billings Endowed Chair in Education and chairing the Education studies department. Dr. Gallardo came to Berea College from Georgetown College, where she served as associate dean of undergraduate education and dean of education, and, before that, she served as associate director of the ESL/Dual Language Program at Kansas State University.
For 12 years, Dr. Gallardo taught elementary school in Arizona on the border of Mexico, where she conceptualized, designed and implemented a dual-language program, served as a bilingual consultant and district writing specialist and co-founded Mexicayotl Academy, a school focused on bilingual/biliterate/bicultural education that is now in its 25th year.
A native of Louisville, Dr. Compton, graduated from Shawnee High School. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Berea College, a master’s degree in education from the University of Louisville, and a Ed.D. in leadership from Spalding University.
Dr. Compton currently serves as the chief diversity officer, associate dean for community engagement and diversity and as an assistant professor in the School of Medicine at the University of Louisville. He is responsible for community engagement and actively advocates for minoritized and medically underserved populations. Dr. Compton’s work includes ensuring medical students are culturally aware and responsive to the ever-growing diverse patient population.
Dr. Compton serves as director of the Southern Region of the National Association for Medical Minority Educators. Additionally, he serves on the PNC Bank Louis-Edward Nicklies scholarship and Alpha Lambda Education Foundation scholarship committees. Dr. Compton is a former Berea College basketball player as well as former employee, serving as an associate director of Admissions and assistant men’s basketball coach.
Both members have been elected to six-year terms as trustees.
