OPPORTUNITIES
In CELTS, we engage students in service, but also provide opportunities for leadership and learning. Our center serves as both an operational base and service site for a host of programs. Interested students can learn more about how to get involved with individual programs through the Volunteer Extravaganza.
What makes our programs unique is the fact that students serve not only as volunteers but also as Program Managers and staff for each of the service-based programs we host.

The Student Service Awards recognize current students for outstanding contributions to our surrounding community and to Berea College. The awards are funded by endowments from donors to Berea College, and the focus of each award was chosen by the donors.
BONNER
SCHOLARS
Berea College was the first institution chosen to participate in the Bonner Scholars Program. It first took part in the fall of 1990. The Corella and Bertram Bonner Foundation of Princeton, New Jersey established the program. After working with John Stephenson, then President of Berea, the foundation determined that Berea’s history, reputation, and commitment to the ethic of service made it the ideal institution to launch the program.
Berea Bonners are part of a nationally recognized network of student leaders. These students share a reputation for outstanding leadership on their respective campuses. They display a commitment to make a difference in the communities and organizations they serve.
The application process for the Bonner Scholars Program is competitive and highly selective. Bonner Scholars are chosen from the incoming class of First Year students, and each year only 15 students are selected to join the program. Sophomore-level students can apply to the program if openings become available. Check out full ‘How to Apply’ page here
Domestic applications for the class of 2025 will go live on February 15th! Early consideration deadline is March 15th with a final deadline of March 31st. The opportunity to apply as an international student will follow. Begin your Berea College Bonner Scholars application here!

Service is a key component of participation in the Bonner Scholars Program. Each Bonner Scholar must have a labor position in service either at the College or in the community. Additionally, Bonners must complete two Summers of Service. Here, they spend seven weeks engaged in regional, national or international communities beyond Berea. For most Bonners, the commitment to service goes well beyond requirements. At Berea, Bonners lead and volunteer in service activities throughout the year.
Where in the world would you like to make a difference?
Wherever Bonners serve, they build connections from people to organizations, to each other, and to the community… strengthening us all in the process.
SERVICE-
LEARNING
Berea College’s service-learning program resides in the Center for Excellence in Learning through Service. Service-learning staff work with faculty and community organizations. Together, they design collaborative projects that address community issues. These projects allow students to develop and apply academic and critical thinking skills.
Through service-learning, students make connections between academic course content and community issues. Service-learning also facilitates the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and resources between Berea College, the local community, the Appalachian region, and beyond.
Completing a designated service-learning course is one way for Berea College students to meet the Active Learning Experience (ALE) requirement of the General Education Program. Faculty members may submit a proposal (PDF file) for their course to be approved as a service-learning course. Contact Ashley Cochrane, CELTS Director, for further information.
