$284,610| 1,165 donors

Because of your generosity, we raised 95 Tuition Promise Scholarships. We are still counting gifts, so please check back later this month for an update.

Challenge Met: We have another exciting matching gift opportunity from friends in Gross Pointe Woods, Mich. Right now, your gift of $50 to any designation will unlock $50 toward Berea’s exciting effort to construct two new technology buildings for our deserving students. Gifts will be matched until we reach a total of $25,000.

Challenge Met: Peter Whitis M.D. ’56 is supporting Berea on Giving Day with a matching gift of $25,000 in memory of his late wife, Martha Noss Whitis ’57, an artist and beloved mother of four. In making a matching gift for Giving Day, Peter hopes other alumni and friends will be inspired by Martha’s memory to give in support of the Berea mission and will match gifts up to the next $25,000.

Challenge Met: Long-time friends from Gross Pointe Woods, Mich. agreed to give $200 for every donor we got over 6 hours – up to $50,000 – that’s 250 donors.

Note: Your gift will go to the area or fund you designate. Dollars from challenge gifts will be distributed to the Berea Fund to complete Tuition Promise Scholarships for students.

TWO WAYS TO GIVE

A gift to the Berea Fund supports Berea College students by allowing them to graduate without the burden of tuition. In the past, Giving Day donations completed more than 388 Tuition Promise Scholarships. How many more can we raise this year? Make a gift toward the Berea Fund today and invest in lives of great promise.

Berea College envisions two future-focused buildings that will harness the power of computer science, digital media and information technology, and applied engineering and design to prepare the next generation of technology thinkers, makers, and innovators. Your financial investment in this important project will ensure that Berea’s students are equipped to be technology leaders of tomorrow—in Appalachia and beyond.

You’re helping Destiney ’23 decode her dreams

Destiney '23 smiling at the camera while working on a computerMeet Destiney ’23, a Computer and Information Science major who will enter her final year at Berea. Destiney grew up in Birmingham, Alabama, where the historic effects of segregation gave her the impression that her future was already determined.

“My sisters and I always heard, ‘You’re going to drop out, no one will hire you, you won’t make it,’” she said. “It’s so easy to believe all that and feel like just one wrong move sends you down the wrong path.” The shadow of historic racial segregation in jobs, housing, schools, and more felt almost inescapable. Destiney felt as if the script for her life had already been written.

After being accepted to Berea College, she declared a Computer and Information Science major and never looked back.

“I had always wanted to learn how to code, but my school’s math classes were so behind I didn’t know how to teach myself. Berea gave me a chance I couldn’t pass up.”

Your generosity ensures Destiney and her classmates can follow their dreams to Berea College and beyond and for that, we want to say thank you. This Giving Day you have the chance to join the Berea community across the globe to support more dreams like Destiney’s.
