Bio

As both the Berea Bridge Director and Writing Program Administrator, Sarah has the pleasure of working with first-year students through multiple facets of their college lives, ranging from a Bridge program trip to a nearby national park to a workshop session in a writing class.

As Director of the Berea Bridge, Sarah helps students prepare for a successful first year at Berea College. Berea Bridge students spend a summer month taking classes, working in labor positions, participating in workshops and mentoring programs, living in campus residence halls, and traveling on off-campus trips. As a result of this summer program, Bridge students develop a network of faculty, mentors, and friends that they can draw on for support throughout their time at Berea and develop the time-management and study skills necessary for balancing the academic, labor, and extracurricular opportunities that Berea College offers.

As Berea College’s Writing Program Administrator, Sarah teaches in and coordinates Berea College’s first-year writing seminar courses, GSTR 110 and 210. Sarah’s program administration is dedicated to helping faculty set and achieve their own teaching goals related to writing through one-on-one consultations and small-group workshops. In this capacity, Sarah works with faculty on developing writing assignment sequences, incorporating peer review workshops into classes, offering effective feedback on student writing, and more. Sarah’s teaching is based on a commitment to helping students become more sensitive and responsive thinkers and communicators. To achieve this, Sarah’s students develop and pursue questions that interest them through a variety of assignments, including analytical essays, podcasts, and research projects.

Sarah earned a B.M. in music performance from Rutgers University, an M.A. in English literature from the University of North Texas, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in English with an emphasis in rhetoric and composition from Penn State University. Sarah has been involved in summer bridge programs for 7 years and has been working with first-year college students as a writing instructor for 12 years. Sarah’s scholarship has appeared in Philosophy & Rhetoric and Rhetoric Society Quarterly.
