The Berea College Technology and Applied Design Department is accepting course registration for spring 2019 Westervelt Program classes, which will focus on making jewelry, wooden boxes and photography. The Westervelt program is offered each year to Berea townspeople as well as students, faculty and staff. The program provides excellent opportunities for individuals to develop a well-rounded educational background and pursue specific areas of interest.
Wood, Wire and Leather Jewelry
This four-week course will explore the art and craft of making jewelry from unique and inexpensive materials. Exotic woods from around the world, colorful aluminum wire, brass and copper tubing, and various types of leather are just a few of the materials that will be used to fashion jewelry during this class. Woven wire bracelets, lathe turned wooden rings and braided leather necklaces are examples of some of the possible student projects.
Fee – $10, plus cost of materials

Thinking Outside the Box
This course will challenge you to “think outside the box” in order to design and fabricate unique wooden boxes. Pushing the limits of traditional design, students will use organic and alternative geometric shapes to create containers that excite the imagination. Projects will be fabricated using a variety of techniques such as lathe turning, steam bending, band sawing and wood sculpting.

Keys to Improving Your Photography
This hands-on workshop will explore many of the techniques and tools that will help you create better photographs, whether using cell phone cameras or high-tech professional cameras. Cameras, exposure, composition, print making and basic editing with Adobe Photoshop are just a few of the topics to be covered in this four-week course.

Named for Edmund C. Westervelt, the program has increased in popularity and growth over the past 70 years. The program was designed to give Berea College students, faculty, staff and townspeople the opportunity to have a practical, hands-on experience enabling them to become more self-sufficient and develop skills and knowledge which could be applied in both vocational and avocational settings, and be more informed consumers of goods and services.
