Concert Choir Fundraising Concert for International Tour

The Berea College Concert Choir will travel on a 15-day concert tour to Spain and Portugal from May 7-May 21, 2014. Music faculty members Dr. Stephen Bolster, conductor; Lindsay Clavere, pianist; Dr. Javier Clavere, organist, and math professor Sandra Bolster, chaperone, will lead choir members on a trip to several Spanish and Portuguese cities, including Barcelona, Valencia, Cordoba, Granada, Seville, Faro and Lisbon. The concert tour will be a “dream come true” for the students. It will include extensive, professionally guided tours of each city and excursions to museums and World Heritage Sites to allow the students to see great treasures of Moorish, Christian and Muslim cultures. The choir will perform high-profile concerts in several of the cities.

To help raise money for this spectacular trip, the choir will be performing a special fundraising concert on Sunday, March 16, at 3 p.m. in Gray Auditorium in the Presser Music Building. The concert will be conducted by Stephen Bolster, music program chair at the college, with Lindsay Clavere at the piano. It will feature choral music by the Concert Choir and the Chamber Singers, and solo vocal music by members of the choirs.

Tickets for the concert are available at the following price levels: Student: $5, Supporter: $10, Friend: $25, Patron: $50 and Sponsor: $100. Two special categories of support are “Barcelona Ambassador” $101-$499, and “Seville Matador” $500+.

Patrons, Sponsors, Ambassadors, and Matadors will have priority seating for the concert and will have their names listed in the concert program. Ambassadors and Matadors will receive a special, commemorative Concert Choir Spanish Tour tee-shirt. Matadors will have the unique experience of being invited up to stage for a personal singing tribute by the choir. Please note that purchase of these tickets at any price level cannot be recognized as a charitable contribution to Berea College.

Tickets for the performance may be purchased in advance beginning on Monday, March 10, in person at the College Store or at the music office in Presser Hall, or by calling the music office at 859-985-3466 on weekdays from March 10-14. Tickets will also be on sale in the lobby of Presser beginning at 2 p.m. on the day of the performance. Cash or personal checks accepted and the memo line needs to specify “Concert Choir Spanish Tour Fund.”

Berea College, the first interracial and coeducational college in the South, focuses on learning, labor and service. The College only admits academically promising students with limited financial resources—primarily from Kentucky and Appalachia—but welcomes students from 41 states and 76 countries. Every Berea student receives a Tuition Promise Scholarship, which means no Berea student pays for tuition. Berea is one of nine federally recognized Work Colleges, so students work 10 hours or more weekly to earn money for books, housing and meals. The College’s motto, “God has made of one blood all peoples of the earth,” speaks to its inclusive Christian character.
