Flamenco Louisville will perform authentic flamenco music and dance at the Berea College Convocation on Thursday, Jan. 31 at 3 p.m., in Phelps Stokes Chapel.
Flamenco Louisville is the oldest flamenco organization in the area. The musicians and dancers of Flamenco Louisville are Spanish-trained professionals who bring authentic flamenco in the puro tradition. Flamenco Louisville is a community-oriented organization, dedicated to the life of their art form and sharing it with others.
Flamenco is a participatory form of dance that grew out of folk dances and music in the Andalusian region of southern Spain. Performances typically include guitar solos, vocal performances and numerous dances, sometimes accompanied by guitar, percussion and vocals or all three. What they create together is a mixture of improvisation and practiced movements and rhythm. Flamenco Louisville also gives a short lesson on audience participation so students can catch the spirit of the performance.
Convocation events, provided free to both the campus and public communities, are a significant part of a student’s educational experience at Berea College. For more information, visit the Convocations site.
