Author of Dead Man Walking, Roman Catholic Nun Helen Prejean began her prison ministry in 1981 and is a leading advocate for the abolition of the death penalty as well as the founder of SURVIVE, an advocacy group in New Orleans devoted to counseling families of victims of violence.
