Berea College’s 74th annual Christmas Country Dance School, December 26 to January 1, is accepting registrations now. Space is limited and spots are filling up for this unique holiday tradition when hundreds of participants create and share holiday memories while learning country dance.
Tuition for the full week is $285.00 if paid before December 1. Scholarships are available on a limited basis. Most events will be held at the Seabury Center at Berea College. For class descriptions, staff biographies, applications, scholarship information, and other details, visit our website, http://legacy.berea.edu/ccds/, or call 859-985-3431.
Ages 13 and older can enjoy daily dances, music, singing and classes in traditional dance styles, including American contra and square dancing, waltz, English country, Morris, rapper, Molly, Danish, Appalachian clogging & Kentucky running sets. Classes are also offered in storytelling, crafts, playing music for dances, dance calling, songs from Ireland, harmony singing, putting on a mummer’s play, and instruments such as tin whistle, recorder, and jaw harp. Internationally-known musicians, callers, and instructors join Kentucky’s finest. Their talent, energy, and patience ensure a week of fun, creativity, learning, and community for all participants. The week concludes with a gala New Year’s Eve banquet and dance.
Many of the classes are graded, so beginners are given the special attention they need, while advanced dancers and musicians are provided with new insights and inspirations. Advanced leadership classes are also available for callers and dance instructors, and teachers can earn continuing education units.
This year, only three of the evening dances on December 26, 28 and 30 will be open to those who are not enrolled full-time. The charge is $20 at the door.
