Súle Greg Wilson, founding member of Carolina Chocolate Drops, will perform at Ballad Night at Berea College on Friday, April 22 at 7:30 p.m. in Gray Auditorium, Presser Hall. The evening is hosted by the Berea College Folk-Roots Ensemble.

Wilson will present a 30-minute set of African American ballads which will be followed by a ballad round robin. The performance is free and open to the public. All audience members must be masked as per college policy due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Berea College Concert Choir’s Annual Fall Concerts on November 2 and 4

The Berea College Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, conducted by Dr. Stephen Bolster, will present their annual fall concerts in Gray Auditorium on November 2 at 8 p.m. and November 4 at 3 p.m. Convocation credit is available to Berea College students for either performance. The public is invited to attend, and there is no charge for admission. The choirs will be accompanied by Lindsay Clavere on the piano, and special guest artists, the Berea College Bluegrass Ensemble, directed by Al White. The 39th annual Celebration of Traditional Music (CTM) will take place at Berea College October 18-21. The celebration will feature national recording artists the Sweetback Sisters and many others. Berea Graduate Marty Edwards Performs Guitar Recital

Marty Edwards, a 2009 graduate of Berea College, will present a solo guitar recital on Saturday evening, March 31 at 8 p.m. in Gray Auditorium in the Presser Music Building on Berea’s campus. The program will feature music from the Suite in E Minor by Baroque composer Sylvius Leopold Weiss, and Bardenklange by 19th century composer Johann Kaspar Mertz, and contemporary guitar music by Ted Oliver, Frederic Hand, John W. Duarte, David Crittenden, and Jorge Morel. Mr. Edward’s wife, soprano Rebekah Edwards, also a recent graduate of Berea College, will join the guitarist on John W. Duarte’s Quiet Songs (1971). Berea College Concert Choir Performs Fall Concerts on Oct. 22 & 23

The Berea College Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, conducted by Dr. Stephen Bolster, will present their annual fall concerts in Gray Auditorium on Saturday, October 22, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, October 23, at 3 p.m.  Convocation credit is available to Berea College students for either performance. The public is invited to attend, and there is no charge for admission.  The choirs will be accompanied by Lindsay Clavere on the piano, and her husband Javier Clavere, on the organ and the piano. The first half of the program consists of sacred music, including 20th-century anthems by William Mathias and René Clausen and it concludes with a section from Franz Joseph Haydn’s famous oratorio “The Creation.”  That work will feature student soloists and faculty tenor Mark Calkins, and two of the most famous choral pieces of the era—“Awake the Harp” and “The Heavens Are Telling.” Continue reading Berea College Concert Choir Performs Fall Concerts on Oct. 22 & 23

Carillon Concert features Gordon Slater, July 4

Berea College’s Summer Carillon Concert on Monday, July 4 at 7:30 p.m., will feature Gordon Slater, retired Dominion Carillonneur of Canada who played the Peace Tower Carillon in Ottawa for 31 years.

Slater’s program will begin with “Suite XIV,” arranged by Berea’s founding carillonneur, the late John Courter. The concert will include the patriotic pieces “America the Beautiful,” You’re a Grand Old Flag” and “The Yankee Doodle Boy” all arranged by Slater.
