Berea’s Carillon Concert Series Begins Saturday, July 8

Roy KroesenBerea College’s Summer Series of Carillon Concerts opens with a performance by guest artist Roy Kroesen, carillonneur of the Centralia Carillon (Illinois). The free concert will be held on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at 7:30 pm (EST) from the John Courter Carillon at Berea College. Special Wish Leads to Special Concert

The bells of Berea College’s carillon rang out with familiar tunes as Marlene Payne, an alumna and former faculty member who taught at the College during the past four decades, presented a special concert to eager listeners. Payne, who graduated from the College in 1961, learned to play the carillon about 10 years ago after taking lessons from John Courter, an internationally known carillonneur and former music professor at Berea College. After Courter’s death in 2010, Payne performed concerts on campus regularly and coordinated visits to Berea by other carillonneurs from all around the U.S. and other nations. Carillon Duo Recital on Monday, August 6, 2012 7:30 P.M.

Visitors to the campus quadrangle tonight are going to be awed. So will Bereans for miles around the campus. Renowned carillon performers Richard Gegner and Richard Watson will be dancing on the batons and pedals in Draper tower starting at 7:30. Carillon Concert features Gordon Slater, July 4

Berea College’s Summer Carillon Concert on Monday, July 4 at 7:30 p.m., will feature Gordon Slater, retired Dominion Carillonneur of Canada who played the Peace Tower Carillon in Ottawa for 31 years.

Slater’s program will begin with “Suite XIV,” arranged by Berea’s founding carillonneur, the late John Courter. The concert will include the patriotic pieces “America the Beautiful,” You’re a Grand Old Flag” and “The Yankee Doodle Boy” all arranged by Slater.
