Academic Advising is central to the education of every Berea College student. The relationship between the academic adviser and the student is the foundation of the advising process at Berea. In this process, the adviser assists the student in reviewing, selecting, and reaching their educational objectives in a helpful, professional, and mutually respectful atmosphere.

Center for Teaching & Learning Homepage

Services: Writing Resources (housed in the Center for Teaching and Learning) offers all students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to improve their writing skills through 50-minute, one-on-one writing consultations and through a variety of writing workshops with trained student consultants.

Services: Counseling Services attempts to meet the personal and developmental needs of individual students. Licensed professional counselors assist students with difficulties in an unbiased and objective way. All professional counseling services are completely confidential. No one, including parents, relatives, friends, or college staff has access to any information about a student without their consent. The only exceptions are suspected child abuse, threats to harm self or others, emergency hospitalization, or civil law suits when one’s mental state is an issue in the case.

Services: Disability & Accessibility Services (DAS) works toward making programs, services and activities accessible for all students. Every student should be able to take part in all facets of the Berea experience. Collaboration with the college’s diverse community is crucial. The office follows the mission of Berea College to create an environment that “frees persons to be active learners, workers and servers as members of the academic community and as citizens of the world.” Disability & Accessibility Services recognizes disability as a valued aspect of diversity. Services: The Campus Christian Center (CCC) helps students explore their own spirituality, engage in worship both on-campus and in the larger community, and to help those on-campus learn more about the spirituality and traditions of others.

Services: The Carter G. Woodson Center for Interracial Education (CGWC), home to the Black Cultural Center (BCC) and Black Student Union (BSU), serves faculty, staff, students, and community members by fostering communication around Berea College’s Great Commitment: To assert the kinship of all people and provide interracial education with a particular emphasis on understanding and equality among blacks and whites.

The Center for International Education
Services: The Francis and Louise Hutchins Center for International Education (CIE) fosters understanding of, and respect for, all peoples of the earth. Initiatives in this Center include Education Abroad and Exchanges, International Student and Scholar Services, Faculty & Curriculum Development, and programming with an international focus.

The Loyal Jones Appalachian Center
Services: The Loyal Jones Appalachian Center (LJAC) links the region and Berea College through programs that bring valuable resources to communities and provide learning opportunities for students, faculty, community members, and staff. The Center offers programming that fosters understanding of the region, its many cultures, and its diverse population.

Quiet study space supervised by student staff of the Center. The BCC is located on the first floor of the Alumni Building in the Carter G. Woodson Center for Interracial Education.

Active Learning Lab (in Hutchins Library)
Flexible space for group work, brainstorming, and practicing presentations with PCs, MACs, Mondopads, Mediascapes. Also offers printers, copiers, and scanners.
Study Rooms (in Hutchins Library)
Reservations for these spaces can be made in person, via phone call, or through an email to the circulation desk.

There are lots of various common areas around campus where you can pause to take a study break. These include:

Teaching assistants are fellow undergraduate students who support students in various disciplines. Please contact your instructor to see if there is a TA who has been placed in your course or a discipline related lab that you may visit.
Service: As part of Hutchins Library, the Technology Help Desk assists students with the use of technology to support work and assignments. Specifically, that means in-depth guidance/instruction with:
- presentation software and apps, such as PowerPoint and Prezi;
- scanning, printing, and copying.
