Kappa Omicron Nu Honor Society
The purpose of this honor society is to recognize and promote excellence in research, scholarship and leadership in the profession of home economics. The Nu Alpha Chapter was chartered in 1991 and is the first chapter since the merger of Omicron Nu (founded 1912) and Kappa Omicron Phi (founded 1922). Membership is open to students and graduates in Child and Family Studies who are in the top ten percent of their junior or senior class at Berea.
Departmental Scholarships
Helen and Jean Barkley Memorial Scholarship in Home Economics
The Helen and Jean Barkley Memorial Scholarship in Home Economics was established by the family of Key Lee Barkley, a Berea College graduate, class of 1926. Family and friends contributed to this endowed fund in memory of Dr. Barkley’s wife, Helen Roberts Barkley, class of 1927, and their daughter, Jean Eloise Barkley, who died at age five. The recipients of this scholarship are to be majors in the profession of home economics “who show promise that they will become worthy citizens of their communities after their graduation from Berea College.”
Jacqueline Hensley Combs Memorial Scholarship in Home Economics
The Jacqueline Hensley Combs Memorial Scholarship in Home Economics is given each year to a junior or a senior home economics major showing a high degree of character, high scholarship, and professional maturity. It was established in memory of Jacqueline Hensley Combs of the class of 1965.
Opal Stamm Husky Scholarship
The Opal Stamm Husky Scholarship provides one or two scholarships each year to students planning to teach Home Economics after graduation. The scholarships have been established to honor Miss Eunice True, former Professor of Home Economics at Berea College.
Ann Grant Lowery Scholarship
The Ann Grant Lowery Scholarship provides financial assistance to one major each year.
Frances Finnell Vandivier Scholarship
The Frances Finnell Vandivier Scholarship was established in 1988 to honor Frances Finnell Vandivier. A graduate of Berea College, Mrs. Vandivier was a compassionate advocate for children in her teaching, writing and community service throughout her life. This scholarship is given to assist Berea College graduating seniors, women and men, to continue their education in the field of child development, child care and/or advocacy for children, youth and families.
Virginia Palmer Widener Memorial Home Economics Fund
The Virginia Palmer Widener Memorial Home Economics Fund provides financial assistance to a student in Home Economics, preferably from Lee County, KY; Washington County, VA; or Bristol, VA. The award was established in memory of Virginia Palmer Widener, a 1988 graduate of Berea College.
