Berea Term Abroad Checklist

You have applied for study abroad and have been approved. Now what?

  1. Attend all orientation sessions. They usually occur on Thursday evenings (unless there is a convocation). These sessions are where you will receive many of the forms listed below.
  2. Complete and submit a Berea Term Abroad Commitment Form to Ann Butwell in Woods-Penn 205.
  3. Apply to a specific abroad program.
  4. Apply for scholarships offered nationally and by your specific provider.
  5. Apply for a passport. Learn how to here. Check our FAQ for more details.

Berea Requirements Before Departure:

The following sections will detail what should be finished in the time leading up to your trip. This includes Registration, Health, Insurance, Financial Aid, etc.

Register during campus registration by turning in Registration and Application for Transfer of Credit form to Student Accounts, Lincoln Hall.

  • (This paper form is given to you during orientation.)Most credits with a C or above will be transferred back as electives and need no prior approvals.
  • If you want major or minor credit, you will need an approval signed by your advisor or the program chair in the relevant major or minor.
  • If you want a course to fulfill a perspective, you will need the Registrar’s office to sign your form. Be sure to attach a course description on your registration form.

Two Months Prior to Departure:

Visit Student Health Services at White House Clinic

  • Get BC health form filled out and upload it here.
  • If your program has its own health form or its necessary for a visa, have them done there at the same visit.
  • Be sure your immunizations are up-to-date.
  • Have your Application for Transfer of Credit signed.

Contact any doctor(s) necessary and inform them of your plans to go abroad. If you need prescriptions for your trip, prepare for this. You will need however much is necessary for the entire duration of your trip.

Two Months Prior to Departure:

You turned in a budget with your application that gets approved by the CIE and passed along to Mr. Chris Thomas of Student Financial Aid Services.

You will have a few chances to get to know him and ask questions. First, he will present at an orientation meeting.

Then you will make an appointment to meet and discuss your plans one-on-one which will be followed shortly after with a drop-in meeting near the end of the term.

Finally, there is a required 3-week check-in from overseas (via email).

Those who are participating in a summer program that does not include the flight need to plan accordingly.
