The technologies of plant breeding have always been controversial. Undoubtedly, new ways of producing crops—and the debates surrounding them—will continue. In her lecture, University of California Davis plant geneticist Dr. Ronald explains how integrated approaches are needed to enhance sustainable agriculture. The genetic engineering of crops launched in 1996, the marker assisted breeding of today, and the genome editing of tomorrow are examples of a continuum of new technologies aimed at helping farmers produce food in a productive and ecologically-based manner.
