Linguistic Blackface: Language and Race in Children’s Animated Film
A growing body of work by linguists, anthropologists, and critics of popular culture examines how social factors contribute to the construction of identity and the use of African American English (AAE). In her presentation, Dr. Bloomquist, Professor of Linguistics and Africana Studies at Gettysburg College, examines how animated films have historically exploited AAE voices to represent social and political ethnicities, and continue to do so today.
