From Black Power to Black Lives Matter

In the mid-1960s, Stokely Carmichael, the leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, demanded a change in the rhetoric and strategy of the Civil Rights Movement by introducing the term “Black Power.” Less than fifty years later, as a direct response to police brutality, “Black Lives Matter” was introduced, both as a rallying cry and an organizing strategy. Dr. Whitehead, a Communication professor at Loyola University Maryland, traces the historical connections between the two movements and their roles in shaping civil rights conversations.
