If I receive services with Counseling Services, can anyone find out about it?

All professional counseling services are completely confidential. NO ONE, including parents, relatives, friends, or college staff, can access any information about a student without their consent. The only exceptions are suspected child abuse, threats to harm self or others, emergency hospitalization, or civil lawsuits when one’s mental state is an issue in the case.

Why would someone go to counseling?

College brings changes, decisions, and often a great deal of stress into a student’s life. Sometimes students find pressures unmanageable or unbearable. During these times, almost everyone needs help in making decisions, handling stress, and responding to a variety of needs and experiences including, but not limited to:

How do I make an appointment?

A first-time appointment can be made by email, phone, or walk-in.

What will the initial appointment entail?

The initial appointment will consist of an intake appointment with one of our therapists. During this appointment, the therapist will ask questions about the student’s needs, concerns, and goals. The student and their therapist will work collaboratively to determine the most appropriate next steps for the student. The appointment will typically last for 50 minutes.

How much does it cost to see a therapist with Counseling Services?

All currently enrolled students, and their partners can see a therapist for free.

Is there a limit to the number of sessions?

Berea College Counseling Services does not have a session limit.

Can I request a specific therapist?

Yes, you can request a specific therapist, but wait times may be longer.

Does Counseling Services offer medication services?

Counseling Services offers psychiatry services for currently enrolled students seeking psychiatric medications through a contracted provider. Counseling Services can also make referrals for medication management to White House Clinic.

Note: Therapists with Counseling Services are unable to prescribe medication.
