Members of the Berea College community continue to distinguish themselves and the College by achieving recognition from regional and national organizations. Each success story below demonstrates an aspect of how Berea College carries out its Great Commitments through outstanding educational programs and their impact in serving “All peoples of the earth.” What follows is a small sampling of some of the recent honors.
Berea Alumna named top nurse under-40 by National Black Nurses Association
Cynethia Bethel-Jaiteh ’03, recently received the National Black Nurses Association Under 40 Award at the organization’s national conference in Memphis, Tennessee. The Under 40 Award recognizes nurses age 40 and younger who have shown strong leadership and excellence in practice.
Bethel-Jaiteh, M.S.N., A.P.R.N., is a University of Louisville School of Nursing Instructor and a pediatric nurse practitioner at Park DuValle Community Health Center in West Louisville. Her work focuses on developing solutions for her patients, particularly for children who are overweight. She began a program at the center that emphasizes proper nutrition and exercise.
Bethel- Jaiteh, 35, says she feels a connection with the people in West Louisville, which is where she grew up. She notes that the majority of the population there are underserved and they face issues with health disparity, equality and access to care.
In addition to her practice duties and instructing students, she is pursuing advance education in the Doctor of Nursing Practice (D.N.P.) program at Northern Kentucky University.
DeAnna Ellis Awarded Brown-Forman Diversity Scholarship
DeAnna Ellis, an accounting student in Berea College class of 2019, was awarded the Brown-Forman Diversity Scholarship at the Kentucky Society of Certified Public Accountants’ (KyCPA) annual banquet.
The KyCPA’s Educational Foundation, on behalf of the Foundation and other benefactors, awards scholarships to college students studying accounting who meet academic as well as financial need criteria.
As an award sponsor, Brown-Forman Corporation puts emphasis on increasing workforce diversity within at all levels of employment, including senior management and executive roles, for ethnic and other minorities, people with disabilities, and all generations.
In addition to the Brown-Forman Diversity Scholarship, DeAnna was selected to serve as Student Ambassador to the Kentucky Society of Certified Public Accountants to help raises awareness of the opportunities within the accounting profession and serve as campus liaison between KyCPA and the Berea College campus.
Dylan Hunziker ’14, Awarded Full Scholarship in Taiwan
Dylan Hunziker ’14, has been awarded admission and full scholarship to National Taiwan University‘s M.A. program in geography. Dylan spent the 2014-15 academic year traveling the world on a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship. He is deeply interested in language and culture, especially the Chinese-speaking world, and hopes to enter a stateside Ph.D. program after his two years in Taiwan. Dylan’s long-term goal is to become a university professor.
The Lane Report Features Berea College’s New AIR Institute
The AIR Institute at Berea College, a newly-acquired arts Incubator program that provides creativity-focused community and economic development workshops and programs, is featured in the latest issue of The Lane Report. Using cross-sector collaboration, AIR serves artists, business people, educators, and the community by teaching design thinking, business planning, and entrepreneurial initiative with the latest business development strategies and tactics. Sierra Club Cool Schools
In recognition of its commitment to Sustainability, Berea College was named by the Sierra Club as a Cool School of the year! The Sierra Club seeks to promote healthy competition among schools, raise environmental standards on campus, and publicly reward the institutions that work hard to protect the planet, and Berea was named one of them!
