Esteemed New York Times best-selling author Roxane Gay to speak at Berea College convocation

Writer, professor, editor and social commentator Roxane Gay will speak at the Berea College convocations on Thursday, March 2 sponsored by the bell hooks center as part of the center’s March 2023 programming calendar.

Gay will join bell hooks center founder and director, M. Shadee Malaklou, for a conversation about hooks’ fearless feminism. Entitled “Writing Toward a Better World,” the pair will think and dream with hooks about how to write toward a better world, addressing topics ranging from trauma to love to how we dismantle the intersecting structures of oppression that hooks names “imperialist white supremacist capitalist patriarchy.”

Gay’s writing appears in “Best American Mystery Stories 2014,” “Best American Short Stories 2012,” “Best Sex Writing 2012,” “A Public Space,” “McSweeney’s,” “Tin House,” “Oxford American,” “American Short Fiction,” “Virginia Quarterly Review” and many more publications. She is a contributing opinion writer for the New York Times. She is the author of the books “Ayiti,” “An Untamed State,” the New York Times bestselling “Bad Feminist” and “Hunger,” and the nationally bestselling “Difficult Women.” She is also the author of “World of Wakanda” for Marvel. She has several books forthcoming and is also working on television and film projects. In addition, she has a newsletter, “The Audacity” and a podcast, “The Roxane Gay Agenda.”

The convocation begins at 3 p.m. in Phelps Stokes Chapel and is free and open to the public.

On Wednesday, March 15, the bell hooks center will host Jennifer Marley for its Gender Talk series. Gender Talk is a monthly series for which the bell hooks center invites distinguished feminist scholars to speak with Berea’s campus and community about contemporary issues. Marley is the co-founder of a popular podcast about indigenous life-worlds, named “The Red Nation Podcast” and is a doctoral student specializing in queer indigenous studies and indigenous feminism. The event will be from noon to 1 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

 

The following week, on Thursday, March 23, the bell hooks center will host a colloquium event with poet and writer Damaris Hill, who was a friend of bell hooks’. The colloquium series provides an opportunity for students to learn more about how they might apply feminism to their personal and professional practices. The event will be from noon to 1 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Finally, on Wednesday, March 29, the bell hooks center will host a student activist talk with international Ukrainian Berea College student Anya Kasianova, a member of the Class of 2024. The event will be from noon to 1 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program  named 21 Berea College students as 2022 award winners. This record-setting number of students received more than $92,000 in funding to study abroad through the Gilman program.

Berea College Student Autumn Harvey Named a Newman Civic Fellow

Harvey joins 212 students from 39 states, Washington, D.C., and Mexico, to form the 2021 Newman Civic Fellow cohort.

Berea College Announces Fulbright Awards for 2020-21

Two Berea College students received national recognition from the  Fulbright U.S. Student Program through the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.

Meredith Black ’19 received her Fulbright award to be an English Teaching Assistant (ETA) in Germany and Shelby Wheeler ’16 to be an ETA in Spain.

Three Berea College Students Named Thomas J. Watson Fellows

Berea College students Stephen Nwaloziri, Aloyce (Hans) Riziki and Sophia Winkowitsch have won the prestigious distinction of being members of the 52nd Class of Thomas J. Watson Fellows.

Watson Fellows are selected from just 40 private colleges and university partners across the United States making the Watson pool extremely competitive. This year there were 153 finalists who were nominated to compete on the national level, from which 47 Fellows were selected.

Berea College Confers Degrees on 248 Graduates at Commencement

After remarks by American author and poet George Ella Lyon, Berea College conferred degrees to 248 graduates at Commencement on May 5. Focused on the topic of “Beginning Again,” Lyon said, “You can’t be sure where your path will take you. What you can be sure of is that it will change, you will change, the world and those you care for will change, too. Your job is to stay in touch with yourself and what matters to you most through these transformations.”

Shyeila “Shy” Bowers, a junior at Berea College, is one of 262 students named as a Newman Civic Fellow for 2019-2020 by Campus Compact, a Boston-based non-profit organization advancing the public purposes of higher education.

“Shy is a hard-working and positive student leader and undergraduate scholar,” said Berea College President Lyle Roelofs. “She uses her community-building approaches to promote dialogue and action to address pressing social issues.”

British Magazine Features Student Woodcrafts

Berea’s student woodcraft program is featured in the latest issue of Woodworking Crafts, a British magazine by the Guild of Master Craftsmen Publications. The article includes many photos and comments by woodcraft students as well as a profile of Andy Glenn, Berea’s woodcraft supervisor. The feature provides a brief overview of Berea College’s distinctive no-tuition model to provide a high quality education for a diverse range of students who could not otherwise afford college. The article also describes the history of the woodcraft program along with explanations of the day-to-day operations that produce the beautiful and functional crafts that consumers prize. Berea Student Develops Hackathon in Tajikistan

Sher Sanginov ’19, a Berea College senior majoring in computer science, recently conducted a hackathon in Khujand, his home city in Tajikistan. Sanginov did not know what a hackathon was until he came to college in the United States, but during his time at Berea College he has had opportunities to participate in Major League Hackathons (MLH). A hackathon, sometimes called an invention marathon, is usually a day-long event where technology professionals and students meet; design a product, such as a web application; and develop a business plan to create a technology solution for a given issue. Berea Student Featured in “The Unafraid,” Making New York Premier June 21

Human Rights Watch Film Festival LogoA Berea College student is one of the subjects featured in “The Unafraid,” a documentary film that makes its New York premier on Thursday, June 21 during the closing night of the Human Rights Watch Film Fest (HRWFF).

“The Unafraid,” is a feature-length documentary produced by Presente Films that follows the personal lives of three Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) students in Georgia, a state that has banned them from attending their top state universities and disqualifies them from receiving in-state tuition at any other public college. Shot in an observational style over a period of four years, this film, by directors and co-producers Anayansi Prado and Heather Courtney, takes an intimate look at the lives of DACA students as they navigate activism, pursuing their right to education and fighting for the rights of their families and communities. Six Berea College Students Awarded U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to Study Abroad

Six Berea College students—Sophia Winkowitsch, Deshontanae Davis, Joy Leis, Simeon Huff, Manuela Hincapie Vidal and Tyler Goins—have been awarded national study abroad scholarships. They are part of a select group of undergraduates across the U.S. chosen to receive the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to study overseas during the Fall 2018 term. These students will complete their coursework in various countries, including Ireland, Spain, Thailand, Chile, Malaysia and Australia. Miguel Ángel Ortega Bañales, who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in music at Berea College, was awarded the Audience Choice Award in the seventh Audrey Rooney Vocal Competition of the Kentucky Bach Choir. Bañales, a student of Berea College music professor Mark R. Calkins, competed against eight student singers in the recent live vocal competition in Lexington. Senior Chemistry Major Receives Berea’s 2017-2018 Red Foley Memorial Music Award

Brenna MacMillan ’18, a senior Chemistry major from Winchester, Kentucky, received Berea College’s 2018 Red Foley Memorial Music Award. Following graduation, she plans to move to Nashville, Tennessee, to perform with her brother Theo MacMillan (2016 Red Foley recipient) and pursue her musical career.

This award, established in memory of Country Music Hall of Fame star Red Foley, is presented annually by Berea College to a talented Berea College student in recognition of his or her musical contributions to the social life of the campus community. The award assists the recipient in a professional music career, if he or she so desires, and promotes the kind of music associated with Red Foley’s career, such as folk, country, bluegrass, gospel and popular music. Eight Berea College Students Awarded U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to Study Abroad

Berea College’s Center for International Education announced that Samantha Robinson, Brandon Mitchell, Niki Clayton, Gerald Thomas, Tiana Moorer, Issac Domenech, Rebecca O’Connor and Chad Runyan are recipients of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. This award, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, is providing $26,500 to support study abroad experiences for Berea’s students during summer 2018. The eight American students will complete coursework in Jamaica, Ghana, Japan, Costa Rica, Italy and Austria.

These Gilman Scholars receive an average of more than $3,300 per student to apply towards their study abroad or internship program costs. The program offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies or internships abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic competitiveness. Students receiving a Federal Pell Grant from two- and four-year institutions who will be studying abroad or participating in a career-oriented international internship for academic credit are eligible to apply. Scholarship recipients have the opportunity to gain a better understanding of other cultures, countries, languages and economies—making them better prepared to assume leadership roles within government and the private sector. The Center for International Education is proud to announce that Berea College nominee Sunaina Sherchan won the national competition for the 2018-2019 Thomas J. Watson Fellowship. The Watson includes a cash prize of $30,000 to provide a year of international discovery for select graduating college seniors in many disciplines.

Hunter MaloneBerea College student Hunter Malone has been named a Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact, a Boston-based, non-profit organization working to advance the public purposes of higher education. Malone, a junior sociology major with a history minor, is one of 268 students from colleges all across America who will make up the organization’s 2018 cohort of Newman Civic Fellows.

“Hunter is a creative and collaborative student leader who is actively involved in mentoring and training others,” said Berea College President Lyle Roelofs. “He is also committed to developing opportunities for others to learn and take action on the issues that are important to them.
