Dr. Nicholas D. Hartlep Recognized By DIVERSE as a 2020 Emerging Scholar

Dr. Nicholas D. Hartlep of Berea College’s education department has been named as a 2020 Emerging Scholar by DIVERSE, a national magazine focused on diverse issues in higher education. Hartlep, who is the Robert Charles Billings Chair in Education and chair of Berea College’s education studies department, is one of 15 minority scholars doing remarkable interdisciplinary work in the academic sphere. Hartlep Appointed Chair of Education Studies, Named the Robert Billings Chair in Education
Berea College appointed Nicholas D. Hartlep as the chair of the department of education studies and named him as the Robert Billings Chair in Education.
Hartlep began his career as a first grade teacher in Rochester, Minnesota, before receiving a doctoral degree in urban education at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee (UWM). He also has a master’s degree in K–12 education and bachelor’s degree in elementary education, both conferred from Winona State University (WSU).
Berea College Student Shyeila Bowers Named a Newman Civic Fellow

Shyeila “Shy” Bowers, a junior at Berea College, is one of 262 students named as a Newman Civic Fellow for 2019-2020 by Campus Compact, a Boston-based non-profit organization advancing the public purposes of higher education.
“Shy is a hard-working and positive student leader and undergraduate scholar,” said Berea College President Lyle Roelofs. “She uses her community-building approaches to promote dialogue and action to address pressing social issues.”

Superlative Superintendents

A little over a year ago, David N. Cook, ’85, contacted the Berea College Magazine with an idea for a feature on eight Berea alumni employed as superintendents of public education in Kentucky. As a policy advisor for the state Department of Education’s Office of Leadership and School Improvement, David mentioned that of the 174 public school superintendents, Berea College had the distinction of having more Kentucky school superintendents than any other private college. Books Open, Pencils Poised: Teaching English in South Korea

Graduating with a business degree didn’t prepare me for this. My first day on the job, I came face to face with a group of seven-year-olds, all speaking a foreign language and seemingly making as much noise as they could. After a few moments the other adult in the room spoke a few works to them, and the children sat up straight in their chairs, books open, pencils poised, reading to learn English.
