Berea College’s Recognition Ceremony for Mid-Year Graduates was held Sunday, Dec. 10 at 3 p.m. in Phelps Stokes Chapel. Dawneda Williams, an honorary Berea College trustee whose work has made a difference in the lives of many in Appalachia, addressed the 47 seniors who will complete their degree requirements at the end of the fall term. Berea College to Host 2nd Annual Kentucky Hunger Dialogue
College students and others interested in eliminating hunger will be urged to take action at the second annual Kentucky Hunger Dialogue on Saturday, September 30. Hosted by the Berea College Center for Excellence in Learning through Service (CELTS) and sponsored by Kentucky Campus Compact, the theme for this year’s Kentucky Hunger Dialogue is “Asset-Based Responses to Hunger.” The event will highlight successful programs already at work in our communities and present tools for engagement with hunger on three levels: emergency response, food systems, and policy change. Alongside non-profit and state agencies, students from colleges and universities across the commonwealth will spend the day networking, learning, and building coalitions. Berea College Welcomes Ntozake Shange
Berea College welcomes the public and campus community to its weekly convocation this Thursday, September 21, 2017, featuring award-winning poet, playwright, performer, novelist and educator Ntozake Shange. In her presentation, Wild Beauty, Shange will explore the many contradictions people of color confront in their daily lives emotionally, psychologically and politically. Through music and language, Shange approaches her material with delicacy and brutal honesty, leaving the audience with a textured mosaic of what it means and how it feels to be a 21st century colored person who speaks English. Ten Berea College Students Awarded U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship To Study Abroad
Berea College’s Center for International Education announced that Kris Tina Anderson, Caleb Bannister, Dorothy Coe, Timothy Hammett, Kyree Hobson, Dominique Jenkins, Emily Newton, Brandon Pollock, Ruth King and Layne Sinkhorn as recipients of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. This award, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, provides funds to study abroad during the Fall 2017-18 Academic Year. The 10 American students will complete coursework in Peru, the Czech Republic, China, South Korea, Cyprus, India, Bhutan, France, Japan, Brazil, and South Africa. Berea College Welcomed Into USA South Athletic Conference
USA South Athletic conference officially welcomed Berea College into its conference on July 1, in time for competing in the league in the fall.
Berea College comes to USA South as a full NCAA Division III member and is eligible to compete in all USA South championships and Berea’s student athletes are now eligible to receive any Conference-awarded academic and/or sportsmanship honors. Berea Students Win KYCPA Scholarships

Two Berea College students were recognized recently by the Kentucky Society of CPAs. Treasure Rogers and Matthew Schwartz were awarded scholarships from the Educational Foundation of the KYCPA, which presents scholarships sponsored by many CPA firms and businesses in Kentucky to accounting students across Kentucky. Matthew Schwartz won a KYCPA scholarship and Treasure Rogers won the Brown Forman Diversity Scholarship and Internship. Five Berea College Students Awarded Scholarships to Study Abroad
Five Berea College students have been selected to receive the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. The Gilman Scholarship Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs is an undergraduate program for U.S. citizens of limited financial means to enable them to study abroad, thereby internationalizing their outlook and better preparing them to thrive in the global economy. Julie Nelms Wins 2017 Red Foley Music Award
Julie Nelms ’17, a senior Appalachian studies major from Robbinsville, North Carolina, won the 2017 Red Foley Music Award. This award, established in memory of Country Music Hall of Fame star Red Foley who attended the Berea Academy, is presented by the Berea College Alumni Association once each academic year to recognize talented Berea students for their musical contributions to the social life of the campus community. Congressman John Lewis Inspires Graduates at Berea College Commencement
U.S. Congressman and noted Civil Rights leader John Lewis urged the 265 members of Berea’s 2017 graduating class to “find a way to get in the way” of social injustices.
Lewis, who represents Georgia’s 5th District, encouraged the graduates to honor Berea College’s heritage of equality for all people. “When you see something that is not right, not fair, not just, you must stand up, speak up, and speak out,” Lewis stated. “You have a duty and a moral obligation given to you by the visionary founders of this college, who saw the need to build an inclusive interracial, coeducational community in 1855, before the end of slavery and the beginning of the Civil War. Berea College Wins First Place in State Business Model Competition

Berea College students Ishwar Agarwal, Tran Nguyen and Amar Zulejhic won first place and $7,500 in the business model category at the Idea State U contest Saturday in Lexington. Idea State U, a statewide business plan and model competition that encourages entrepreneurship among Kentucky’s college and university students, is funded by The Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development’s Office of Entrepreneurship, in partnership with the Kentucky Innovation Network. The Idea State U business plan competition is open to all post-secondary institutions in Kentucky and rewards creative entrepreneurial students. Congressman John Lewis and Bishop Debra Wallace-Padgett will address the graduating class along with their faculty and invited guests at Berea College’s 2017 Commencement and Baccalaureate ceremonies, Sunday, May 7, 2017. Congressman Lewis will speak at Commencement, which begins at 2:00 p.m., in the Seabury Center, Main Arena. Tickets must be obtained in advance and are required for main arena as well as overflow seating for Commencement. Bishop Wallace-Padgett will speak at the Baccalaureate ceremony, which begins at 10:30 a.m. in Phelps Stokes Chapel. No tickets are required to attend this service. The Berea College Concert Choir and Chamber Singers will present their annual spring concert in Gray Auditorium on Sunday afternoon, April 23 at 3:00 p.m. Gray Auditorium is located in Presser Hall (on Chestnut Street) on the Berea College campus, Berea, KY. The Berea College Center for International Education is proud to announce that Berea College Nominee Zakiyya Ashe won the national competition for the 2017-2018 Thomas J. Watson Fellowship prize of $30,000.

Berea’s Success Graduating African-American Students Highlighted by “Diverse” Magazine
Linda Strong Leek, Berea’s vice president for diversity and inclusion and associate vice president for academic affairs, was interviewed for a recent article published by DIVERSE Issues in Higher Education. The article focused a comparison of graduation rates of Black students and their White counterparts, as presented in a report by The Education Trust that identified institutions that are succeeding (or not) in graduating Black students. Tim Glotzbach, Director of Berea College’s Student Crafts Program is being featured on Kentucky Life on KET – Kentucky Educational Television. Host Doug Flynn interviewed him about Berea’s student-made crafts and Berea’s new AIR Institute, which builds on the College’s tradition of serving artists. The AIR Institute expands financial opportunities for Appalachia, and promotes arts, crafts, and creative business practices so students and others in the region can learn to develop a financially sustainable living as artists and social entrepreneurs.
