Final Stephenson Memorial Concert of the Season at Berea College
LIVE from AUSTIN, TEXAS! Virtuoso accordionist, singer, and producer Joel Guzman and gifted bi-lingual singer-songwriter Sarah Fox are two-time Grammy Award winners who will push the boundaries of Tex-Mex music in their performance on Thursday, April 9, 2015, 8:00 p.m. at Phelps Stokes Chapel on the Berea College campus.
Joel Guzman and Sarah Fox are a new breed of Latin artists. Fox has the expressive voice of a jazz singer which lends its skills beautifully to the “caliente” Latin themes; and Guzman is a virtuoso accordionist and producer that music critics have called brilliant and extraordinary—his accordion music will encourage audiences to move and dance! They draw from Hispanic influences around the world. Their music blends German traditions of the button accordion with the Mexican bajo sexton 12 string guitar and contrabajo bass to create a spicy mix. For the Berea College performance they will be Joined by their band– Los Aztex.
This performance, which is part of the Stephenson Memorial Concert, is the final convocation of the Spring semester. The Stephenson Memorial Concert Fund was generously established in 1987 by the late Louis B. Stephenson Jr. and Edna M. Stephenson in memory of their daughter, Nancy Anne, a pianist who died early in her life. Following his death a few months after his retirement, the concerts were designated as also honoring their son, John B. Stephenson, President of Berea College, 1984-1994.
Convocations at Berea College are free and open to the public.
