Berea alumnus Loyal Jones ‘54, a former faculty member and founding director of the Appalachian Center that now bears his name at Berea College, is one of the winners who will receive a special award at this week’s East Kentucky Leadership Conference in Richmond, KY. The award, given in honor of former WYMT broadcaster, Tony Turner, honors individuals for their contributions to the Appalachian region.
Jones directed the Appalachian Center at Berea College from 1970-1993. Throughout his career he has focused on writing and educating others about Appalachian people, their history, and their culture. In 2008, the Berea College Board of Trustees passed a resolution to rename the Appalachian Center at Berea College the Loyal Jones Appalachian Center in recognition of his distinguished career and notable accomplishments as the Center’s founding director.
Now in its 28th year, the East Kentucky Leadership Conference promotes leadership development, communication and collaboration throughout the Eastern region of the Commonwealth. The Conference, sponsored by the East Kentucky Leadership Foundation, presents sessions about issues affecting the region, speakers who challenge Eastern Kentuckians to become leaders in their communities, and an annual awards ceremony at which Jones will be recognized.
