Berea College recognized 74 students Sunday during its Mid-Year Recognition Ceremony. Carl and Ann Evans, a couple with deep Berea roots, addressed the seniors, who represented 17 states and five different countries.

During the first in-person spring commencement ceremony in three years due to COVID, Berea College recognized 260 students. This included 45 students who graduated between 2019-2021. The 215 graduates for 2022 represented 18 different countries.
Guest speaker Geoffrey Canada, globally renowned president and creator of the Harlem Children’s Zone and advocate for education reform, spoke during the ceremony on meeting challenges facing our youth. Symerdar Baskin was awarded the Honorary Alumna Award and Andrew Baskin received the Rodney C. Bussey Award of Special Merit at Homecoming 2021.

The Berea College Alumni Association presented Andrew Baskin with the Rodney C. Bussey Award of Special Merit during this year’s Black Student Union Pageant. Baskin’s wife, Symerdar, was presented with an Honorary Alumna Award.
Andrew Baskin was raised in Alcoa, Tenn., and came to Berea as a student in 1968. He majored in history and graduated in 1972 with enough hours for a double major in Black studies. In 1975, he earned a master’s degree in history at Virginia Tech University and went on to teach at Ferrum College in Virginia.

The Berea College Board of Trustees has elected Megan Torres of Alexandria, Va., and Cassie Helen Chambers Armstrong of Louisville, Ky., to serve on the Berea College Board of Trustees.

After graduating from Berea College in 2009 with a degree in Business Administration, Torres returned to her home state of Virginia, where she worked at the National Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) within the U.S. Department of Agriculture. While there, she focused on a variety of projects, including contracting system administration, policy, training/certification management and performing market research for micro purchases.

Jennifer Bentz, a Berea College alumna of Maryville, Tennessee, received a Fellowship worth $8,500 by The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi (PKP)—the nation’s oldest collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Bentz is one of 58 recipients nationwide to receive a Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship.
Bentz received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Berea College earlier this year. As a Phi Kappa Phi Fellow, Bentz will pursue a Doctor of Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

Berea College’s Recognition Ceremony for Mid-Year Graduates was held Sunday, Dec. 8 at 3 p.m. in Phelps Stokes Chapel. Jim Branscome, retired managing director for investment analysis of Standard & Poor’s (S&P), addressed the seniors who completed their degree requirements at the end of this term. The Berea College graduates represent 14 states and 10 other countries.

Berea College alumni and former College staff members are performing in “Noel and Reb,” the final play at Berea Arena Theater. The play, a comedy by Paul Nelson Power ’58, is being performed as a tribute to Power’s widow, Barbara Byrd Power ’56.
“The proceeds go to the Paul Nelson Power Scholarship at Berea College in memory of this legendary professor, author and director,” said Eddie Kennedy ’68, who is the founder and producer of Berea Arena Theater. “The scholarship was established in 1998 by students, friends and family to honor his boundless energy and enthusiasm for theatre.”

Berea College installed a Nobel Prize—won by alumnus John Fenn ’37, for his notable work in chemistry—in the new Margaret A. Cargill Natural Sciences and Health Building. Science faculty, students, College officials and family members of the late Dr. Fenn gathered to hear remarks about his development of Electrospray Ionization and its impact on developing life-saving medicines.
Berea College’s Loyal Jones Appalachian Center has announced the winners of the “Appalachian Narratives for Our Time” award for essays about how Appalachians thrive in the places they call home.
The submitted essays focus on the authors’ compelling life stories and illustrate the challenges of coming of age, working and living in the realities of family and community.
“Appalachia has a rich and, at the same time, challenging history,” said Chris Green, director of the Loyal Jones Appalachian Center. “All too often, however, national media portrays difficulties in the region as the fault of people who live here. We wanted to give the majority of Appalachians who grow up and make good lives a new opportunity to tell their stories.”

The Berea community responded generously to the 26th annual Hunger Hurts Food Drive with 792 bags of food. Coordinated by Berea College’s Center for Excellence in Learning through Service (CELTS), in collaboration with Berea Faith Community Outreach (BFCO), the food collection netted more than 100 bags of food than last year. The 26th annual Hunger Hurts Food Drive, coordinated by Berea College’s Center for Excellence in Learning through Service (CELTS), in collaboration with Berea Faith Community Outreach (BFCO), runs from Oct. 27 to Nov. 3, 2018.

Berea College Alumnus Jack Roush ’64 went from Mr. Fix-It in his college years to an enormously successful career in the drag-racing, road-racing and, eventually, NASCAR fields. Since 1998, Roush’s racing teams have won 325 races in the three NASCAR national touring series, more than any other car owner in history. With the arrival of spring comes the resumption of the President’s Run/Walk Club, which has been on hiatus from the end of last semester to after Spring Break.
The President’s Run/Walk Club is open to current active members and anyone new wanting to join us—including Berea College alumni who live in the area. The group meets at 7:00 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays (weather permitting) at Seabury Circle, on the side of the building facing the Danforth Technology Building. Showcasing the significance of history is nothing new to John Fleming.
Dr. Fleming ’66, is known throughout the country for his scholarship, particularly in the African-American experience. As a historian, author, academician and museum expert, Fleming has increased inclusion of African American stories and culture into museum presentations and education, including the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, and most recently the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum. Berea College President Lyle Roelofs presented Carl Thomas ‘78 and his wife, Deborah Byrd Thomas ’80, with the President’s Medallion at a surprise ceremony during the College’s 2017 Homecoming Weekend on Saturday, November 18.
Established in 1988 by then-President John B. Stephenson, the award is given at the discretion of the President to honor those who have shown “exemplary service in the advancement of Berea College and its cause.” Together, the Thomases are the 16th recipients of the President’s Medallion.
