Saderholm Named Berea’s Dean of Faculty

Berea College President Lyle Roelofs appointed Dr. Matthew Saderholm as dean of faculty following a recommendation of the dean selection committee. Saderholm succeeds Dr. Chad Berry, who has served as dean since 2011.

“I am honored to be selected as the next Dean of the Faculty at Berea College,” Saderholm said. “The support of my colleagues and administrators has been truly humbling and I will work hard to validate their trust in me. Beyond sustaining the excellent work of our outgoing Dean and Provost, Chad Berry, I will focus on listening to my faculty colleagues so that we can move forward collectively on what is most important.”

Nobel Prize Comes “Home” to Berea

Berea College installed a Nobel Prize—won by alumnus John Fenn ’37, for his notable work in chemistry—in the new Margaret A. Cargill Natural Sciences and Health Building. Science faculty, students, College officials and family members of the late Dr. Fenn gathered to hear remarks about his development of Electrospray Ionization and its impact on developing life-saving medicines.

Berea College officials conducted a dedication ceremony of the Margaret A. Cargill Natural Sciences and Health Building on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018. The new 125,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility houses the College’s science disciplines, mathematics and nursing. Nearly 1,000 alumni, friends, faculty, staff and students raised more than $12 million to make the vision for this new facility a reality. Berea Exceeds $10 Million Campaign Goal for New Science/Health Building

Berea College is proud to announce that it has exceeded its $10 million campaign goal for the Margaret A. Cargill Natural Sciences and Health Building, raising over $12 million in less than two years.  Nearly 1,000 alumni, friends, faculty, staff and students joined together to make the vision a reality. The Margaret A. Cargill Natural Sciences and Health building will be a 125,000-square-foot facility that will house the College’s science disciplines, mathematics and nursing. The Healing Power of Our Own Bodies

A few years ago, Dr. Rocky Tuan, ’72, an expert in musculoskeletal systems and a pioneer in the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, was asked by doctors at Walter Reed Army Medical Center to help them study a problem affecting soldiers returning from combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Wounds to their arms and legs weren’t healing properly. “People who have blast injuries have a very high incidence of heterotopic ossification,” says Rocky. ”Bone forms where it’s not supposed to form, particularly after amputation, and we wanted to know why.” The condition causes deformity and pain at the amputation site and makes wearing a prosthesis difficult. “The veteran population is a unique group to serve. Their history and experiences are so rich and talking to them is a real pleasure.”

It’s not surprising that Leslie Boyd Long, ’89, became an internal medicine doctor. She grew up with a hospital in the back of her house. Leslie was the only girl and youngest of four children on a farm outside Tollesboro, a small town in Lewis County, Kentucky.
