Andrew and Symerdar Baskin Honored for Dedication, Commitment to Berea College

Symerdar Baskin was awarded the Honorary Alumna Award and Andrew Baskin received the Rodney C. Bussey Award of Special Merit at Homecoming 2021.

The Berea College Alumni Association presented Andrew Baskin with the Rodney C. Bussey Award of Special Merit during this year’s Black Student Union Pageant. Baskin’s wife, Symerdar, was presented with an Honorary Alumna Award.

Andrew Baskin was raised in Alcoa, Tenn., and came to Berea as a student in 1968. He majored in history and graduated in 1972 with enough hours for a double major in Black studies. In 1975, he earned a master’s degree in history at Virginia Tech University and went on to teach at Ferrum College in Virginia.

Two Alumni Awards Presented at Berea College Homecoming

Each year during Homecoming Bereans are recognized for their professional accomplishments, contributions to the community and commitments to the mission of Berea College. This year, Jim Gaines ’56 received the Distinguished Alumnus award and Sharyn Mitchel FD ’65 BC ’69 received the Rodney C. Bussey Award of Special Merit. Three Alumni Awards Presented at Berea College Homecoming

During Berea College’s Homecoming three Bereans were recognized for their professional accomplishments, contributions to the community and commitments to the mission of Berea College. Larry Allen ’78 and Jack Roush ’64 received Distinguished Alumnus awards. Silas House, published author and member of the College teaching faculty, was presented an Honorary Alumnus Award. President’s Medallion Presented to Carl Thomas ’78 and Deborah Byrd Thomas ’80

Carl and Deborah Thomas with Lyle RoelofsBerea College President Lyle Roelofs presented Carl Thomas ‘78 and his wife, Deborah Byrd Thomas ’80, with the President’s Medallion at a surprise ceremony during the College’s 2017 Homecoming Weekend on Saturday, November 18.

Established in 1988 by then-President John B. Stephenson, the award is given at the discretion of the President to honor those who have shown “exemplary service in the advancement of Berea College and its cause.” Together, the Thomases are the 16th recipients of the President’s Medallion. Juried Alumni Art Exhibition Opens at Berea College

Alumni Art ExhibitDoris Ulmann Galleries at Berea College has announced the opening of its first Juried Alumni Exhibition. Held in the Lower Traylor Gallery of the Rogers-Traylor Art Building, the show will be on display from Oct. 1 until Nov. 17, 2017. Berea College Celebrates Homecoming 2011

Berea College will celebrate its 2011 homecoming, November 11-13, with special celebrations for the classes of 1986, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006, and 2011.

Special events include an alumni awards reception, a career networking opportunity, a block party on Main Street, the Black Music Ensemble concert, two basketball games and BereaFEST with inflatables, live music, food and children’s activities.
