Andrew and Symerdar Baskin Honored for Dedication, Commitment to Berea College

Symerdar Baskin was awarded the Honorary Alumna Award and Andrew Baskin received the Rodney C. Bussey Award of Special Merit at Homecoming 2021.

The Berea College Alumni Association presented Andrew Baskin with the Rodney C. Bussey Award of Special Merit during this year’s Black Student Union Pageant. Baskin’s wife, Symerdar, was presented with an Honorary Alumna Award.

Andrew Baskin was raised in Alcoa, Tenn., and came to Berea as a student in 1968. He majored in history and graduated in 1972 with enough hours for a double major in Black studies. In 1975, he earned a master’s degree in history at Virginia Tech University and went on to teach at Ferrum College in Virginia.

Two Alumni Awards Presented at Berea College Homecoming

Each year during Homecoming Bereans are recognized for their professional accomplishments, contributions to the community and commitments to the mission of Berea College. This year, Jim Gaines ’56 received the Distinguished Alumnus award and Sharyn Mitchel FD ’65 BC ’69 received the Rodney C. Bussey Award of Special Merit. Three Alumni to be Recognized for Outstanding Contributions

Three Berea College alumni will be recognized with special awards during this year’s Summer Reunion. The Rodney C. Bussey Award of Special Merit will be presented to Virgil Burnside ’74 and Jackie Grisby Burnside ’74. The Berea Alumni Loyalty Award will be presented to Peter S. Thoms ’55. These three alumni will be celebrated during the Alumni Awards Presentation and Reception at 10 a.m., Sat., June 15 in the Boone Tavern Event Center. Distinguished Alumnus Award

When Sumit Ganguly arrived at Berea College in 1973, he decided to major in English. However, thanks to the influence of Professor Gary Sykes, he picked political science as a second major, a decision that shaped much of his professional career. Berea College Honors Five Alumni

Two psychologists, the president of the Global Research Group, a pathologist, and a reverend were recipients of Berea College’s 2011 alumni awards. The awards, given by the Alumni Association, recognize the accomplishments of alumni in their professional lives as well as their service to the college. The Distinguished Alumnus Award is given to alumni who have achieved distinction in their chosen field and applied the principles fostered at Berea to enrich the lives of others. The Outstanding Young Alumnus Award is given to alumni during or prior to their twentieth class reunion year, and whose achievements in career, public service and volunteer activities are worthy of recognition. The Alumni Loyalty Award is given to alumni who have rendered outstanding service to, and demonstrated loyal interest in, Berea College. The Honorary Alumnus Award is given to non-alumni in recognition of their outstanding service to, and demonstrated loyal interest in, Berea College. Terry Lee Allebaugh, ‘81, a long-time advocate for providing services to the homeless, and Dr. Wallace Campbell, ‘66, a former dean at Alice Lloyd College and Pikeville College, received Distinguished Alumni awards for their notable accomplishments after graduating from Berea. Frances Rogers, ‘66, received the Alumni Loyalty award for being a loyal financial supporter and ambassador for the college. Retired music professor Robert J. Lewis received the Honorary Alumnus award for his dedication to teaching students at Berea for more than 50 years.
