Sad News to Share

Beloved Bereans,

It is with great sadness that I write to inform you of sad news about the sudden death of Joshua Grooms, a student from West Union, Ohio. At this time, family members have been notified and other details are still being processed. When other pertinent information becomes available, it will be shared in a timely manner.

We extend our prayers and sincerest sympathy to the family and friends of Joshua at this tragic time.

If needed, students, faculty, and staff may contact trained members of the Campus Christian Center(x-3926) and of Counseling Services (x-3212), who are available to provide opportunities to talk about thoughts and feelings in response to this tragic loss.

In the meantime, I encourage all members of our campus community to show the kind of love and support to each other for which Berea is well known and to lift up the Grooms family in your thoughts and prayers.

In sorrow,

President Roelofs

Berea College, the first interracial and coeducational college in the South, focuses on learning, labor and service. The College only admits academically promising students with limited financial resources—primarily from Kentucky and Appalachia—but welcomes students from 41 states and 76 countries. Every Berea student receives a Tuition Promise Scholarship, which means no Berea student pays for tuition. Berea is one of nine federally recognized Work Colleges, so students work 10 hours or more weekly to earn money for books, housing and meals. The College’s motto, “God has made of one blood all peoples of the earth,” speaks to its inclusive Christian character.
